As in sedimentation, the concentration of the particles in the elutriators affects the results of measurement. Also the velocity in the elutriators tends to be parabolic rather than uniform and thus introduces errors in measurement. The scale-up of filtration centrifuges is usually done on an area basis, based on small-scale tests. Buchner funnel-type tests are not of much value here because the driving force for filtration is not only due to the static head but also due to the centrifugal forces on the Hquid in the cake. A test procedure has been described with a specially designed filter beaker to measure the intrinsic permeabiHty of the cake (7). The best test is, of course, with a small-scale model, using the actual suspension. Many manufacturers offer small laboratory models for such tests. Fat Content of Milk. Raw milk as well as many dairy products are routinely analyzed for their fat content. The Babcock test, or one of its modifications, has been a standard direct measure for many years and is being replaced by indirect means, particularly for production operations. The Babcock test employs a bottle with an extended and caHbrated neck, milk plus sulfuric acid [7664-93-9] to digest the protein, and a centrifuge to concentrate the fat into the caHbrated neck. In dye-binding tests, milk is mixed with excess acidic dye solution where the protein binds the dye in a constant ratio and forms a precipitate. After the dye—protein interaction takes place, the mixture is centrifuged and the optical density of the supernatant is determined. For determination of the aerodynamic diameters of particles, the most commonly apphcable methods for particle-size analysis are those based on inertia aerosol centrifuges, cyclones, and inertial impactors (Lundgren et al..
