Mauritia flexuosa, also locally called buriti, is widespread in lowlands of northern South America on poor sandy soil. It is a very tall palm carrying up to 8 fruit bunches per year and is found in dense stands in Peru. The composition of the whole fruit is 53% water, 25% kernel and 22% pulp and skin. Oil content of the skin and pulp (dry basis) is reported at 24.55% (Bohorquez, 1972) and 29% (Blicher-Mathieson and Balslev,... [Pg.220]

Other vegetation types occur within the Cerrado Biome. Gallery forests occur along the rivers, and contain many species which also occur in the rain forests of the Amazon and the Atlantic coast of Brazil (Oliveira-Filho and Ratter, 1995). Wet campos, lacking trees, except the fan palm Mauritia flexuosa L.f., frequently occur between cerrados and gallery forest, where there is extreme fluctuation of the water table. In these areas, waterlogging in the wet season excludes woody cerrado species, while in the dry season the soils are too dry to support gallery forest species. Seasonally dry tropical forest occurs on areas of fertile soil, which are often associated with calcareous rocks (Ratter et al., 1978). [Pg.8]

Amazonian fan palm Mauritia flexuosa) the sap flows from the inflorescence stalks after scorching the palm with fire. Daily production is 4—20 liters from a single palm with the flow rate continued for 2-3 months. The sap may be evaporated into brown palm syrup Cltigg D ) ot is fermented to palm wine, which may be further processed into arrack or vinegar. [Pg.293]
