Harada and Matsumoto studied the effect of solvents on the % ee of the amino acids formed in asymmetric transamination.56 Generally, the optical activity of alanine prepared from benzyl pyruvate and (S )-)-)-1-phenylethylamine decreased with increasing polarity of the solvents used. From the finding that sodium a-phenylglycinate was hydrogenolyzed easily to ammonia and phenylacetate over palladium catalyst, Harada prepared optically active alanine, butyrine, glutamic acid, and aspartic acid in 40-60% optical purities from the corresponding a-oxo... 

Lown and Matsumoto studied the reactions of a variety of heteroaromatic nitrogen compounds with diphenylcyclopropenone (39) and diphenylcy-clopropenethione (40). Quinazoline with the cyclopropenone 39 gave the pyrrolo[l,2-c]quinazoline 41, but reaction with thione 40 resulted in 42, a product in which one molecule of the solvent methanol was also incorporated.

In the pharmaceutical industry, GA is used in pharmaceutical preparations and as a carrier of drugs since it is considered a physiologically harmless substance. Additionally, recent studies have highlighted GA antioxidant properties (Trommer Neubert, 2005 Ali Al Moundhri, 2006 Hinson et al., 2004), its role in the metabolism of lipids (Tiss et al., 2001, Evans et al., 1992), its positive results when being used in treatments for several degenerative diseases such as kidney failure (Matsumoto et al., 2006 Bliss et al., 1996 Ali et al., 2008), cardiovascular (Glover et al., 2009) and gastrointestinal (Wapnir et al., 2008 Rehman et al, 2003).

Systematic TRSHG studies on alkali-atom adsorbed metal surfaces by Matsumoto and coworkers provided a deep insight on how coherent motions are created under very different electronic configurations [15, 77, 78]. The results showed that the coherent phonon generation critically depends on the surface and bulk electronic structure of the substrate.
