Knowledge of the seriousness of adverse health effects due to tobacco use is helpful in motivating a user to quit, as well as maintaining abstinence. Physicians who advise their patients to quit smoking can produce cessation rates of 5-10%. Thus, education plays a critical role in tobacco cessation for all ages. A variety of self-help materials (books, tapes, pamphlets, newsletters, software, and Internet sites) are available to inform and aid in quitting tobacco use.

All flooded paper materials—books, periodicals, documents, rare books, files, and records—were frozen as quickly as possible to prevent biological growth. A restoration effort to save the library s contents and a parallel on-site applied conservation research program were established. The goal of this research program was to develop, whenever possible, new techniques and to improve traditional methods for restoring flood-damaged library materials (1). 

Materials. Book papers dating from about 1790 to 1983 and provided by the Library of Congress were used. The book documents were selected at approximately 10-year intervals and are listed in Table I. Whatman filter paper was used as a cellulosic sample. The fiber sources of the paper documents were determined by a staining technique developed by Graff (5). The aluminon test (6) and Raspail test (7) were performed to determine the presence of alums and rosins, respectively, in paper documents. For comparison purposes, pH values of paper documents were obtained by cold-distilled-water extraction of 1 g of paper for 1 h.

This chapter is not a comprehensive description of fillers in plastics and of the respective properties of the resulting materials. Books are written on this subject (see, for example. Ref. [1]). This chapter aims at a brief description of minerals which are either used as fillers in WPG or can be used readily, taking into account their cost and value-added properties. Besides, this chapter gives some examples of properties of WPGs after mineral fillers were added to the composition.
