DEZ [Diethyl zinc] A process for preserving books and documents by treatment with diethyl zinc vapor, which neutralizes ary residual acidity from the papermaking process. The articles are placed in a low-pressure chamber and suffused by diethyl zinc vapor. This vapor reacts with the moisture in the paper to yield zinc oxide, which neutralizes the acid. The process was developed by Texas Alkyls (a joint company of Akzo and Hercules) and the U S. Library of Congress. A pilot plant was set up in 1988, capable of treating batches of 300 books, and plans to build two larger plants were announced in 1989.

In 1938, Dr. Sanchez Belda was promoted from Director of the National Historical Archives to the Director General of Archives and Libraries, a position with political influence, under the Minister of Education and Science. Now there was not only interest but, perhaps more important, authority together in the same person. One of his first chores was to draft legislation that would implement his project of a few years before. In a matter of months after Dr. Belda took office, the Spanish chief of state signed a decree dated September 15, 1969, that established the National Center for the Restoration of Books and Documents under the Director General of Archives and Libraries (9).

The deterioration of paper in books and documents has been a concern for many years. Research by paper conservators indicates that books and manuscripts may be protected from aging by treatment with alkaline agents viiich neutralize the acidity of the paper as it develc s (3,, , 6,2). ie deaoidification process not oily neutralizes the acTdity of the oxidized cellulose, but also leaves an "alkaline reserve" in the paper to retard future deterioration. 

The choice of a particular drying method is also partly dictated by the scale of the operation. Where it is necessary to remove vast quantities of water from a very dilute solution, e.g. for purposes of waste water purification, freeze-drying is completely unrealistic. On the other hand, the method has been successfully used to dry valuable books and documents in libraries that have suffered flood damage.

The use of a portable NMR device allows a non-invasive investigation of paper to assess the state of conservation of books and documents of historical or artistic interest. The NMR investigation focused on relaxation measurements whose results seem compatible with different relaxation rates in crystalline and amorphous cellulose domains. By a simplified physical picture based on spin-diffusion it appears possible to detect the alteration of the crystalline/ amorphous cellulose balance and therefore to get information on deterioration processes of paper. ...
