Materials and operating conditions

To do this, not only must he know the chemistry of the reactions but he must know the rates at which the reactions occur and what affects those rates. The study of this is called chemical kinetics. By the proper choice of raw materials and operating conditions for the reaction stage the process designer can manipulate the ratio of products formed. One major variable is the temperature. An increase in temperature usually causes the reaction rates to increase, but some increase faster than others. Thus, the product mix in the reactor is dependent on the temperature. The pressure and the time the material spends in the reactor also affects the results. In the gaseous phase ahigh pressure will impede those steps in which the number of moles is increased and assist those in which the number of moles is decreased. A... [Pg.79]

At macroscopic level, the overall relations between structure and performance are strongly affected by the formation of liquid water. Solution of such a model that accounts for these effects provides full relations among structure, properties, and performance, which in turn allow predicting architectures of materials and operating conditions that optimize fuel cell operation. For stationary operation at the macroscopic device level, one can establish material balance equations on the basis of fundamental conservation laws. The general ingredients of a so-called "macrohomogeneous model" of catalyst layer operation include ... [Pg.408]

With a larger N, the width of the elution curve becomes narrower at a given V r, and a better resolution will be attained. The dependence of the value of N on the characteristics of packing material and operating conditions is not clear with the stage model, because the value of N is obtained empirically. The dependence of Hs on these parameters can be obtained by the following rate model. [Pg.177]

Classic quality control methods normally focus on specification testing of the final product. There may be some concern about controlling the products only with the specification testing of final products (i.e., it should also be required to incorporate the in-process control parameters, such as the specification of starting material and operation condition of equipment for manufacture). These concerns include the following ... [Pg.235]

To size a rotameter requires calculating the volumetric flow rate of a standard fluid at standard conditions. Most manufacturers calibrate rotameters using a stainless-steel float and water at a standard tenperature for liquids and air at a standard tenperature and pressure for gases. For other fluids, float materials, and operating conditions, the flow rate must be converted to an equivalent flow rate of water or air. To derive a formula for making this conversion, Bernoulli s equation is applied across the float shown in Figure 8.15 to give Equation 8.9. [Pg.450]

The materials and operating conditions used for the growth of titania on silica are listed in Table 1. The precursor-support surface reaction was carried out in vacuum in a heated fixed-bed quartz chamber of a flow-type ALD reactor (F-120, ASM Microchemistry Ltd.) [8]. The adsorption was performed by letting the precursor gas flow react with the silica surface and the solids were further calcined in oxygen. [Pg.778]

Spray-drying is an operation by which a liquid product is atomized in a hot gas current to instantaneously obtain a powder with particle sizes range from 10-50 pm to 2-3 mm, depending on the starting feed material and operating condition. The gas can be air or more rarely nitrogen. The liquid may be a solution, an emulsion, or a suspension (Gharsallaoui et al., 2007). [Pg.870]

Spray-drying produces, depending on the starting feed material and operating conditions, a very fine powder (10-50 hn) or large size particles (2-3 mm). The main advantages are the ability to handle labile materials because of the short contact time in the dryer, in addition, the opaation is econontical. In modern spray-dryers, the viscosity of the solutions to be sprayed can be as high as 300 mPa-s. [Pg.1088]

The physical modeling for fundamental imderstanding, diagnostics, and design of new materials and operation conditions of direct alcohol fuel cells is addressed in Chap. 8. The modeling of mechanisms and processes at atomistic and single-cell levels is critically reviewed, as well as the theoretical challenges. A multiscale... [Pg.377]

The result of these probabilistic evaluations is useful to verify the safety level of the vessel, to highlight areas on which research effort is still needed, to estimate the safety improvement due to further provisions as an increase of the in-service inspections, changes in design, material and operating conditions, etc. [Pg.122]

Power requirements are not a major concern when choosing solids mixers since other considerations usually predominate. Sufficient power must be provided in order to handle the maximum needs, as well as to prevent changes during the mixing operation. When materials and operating conditions are subjected to variation, enough power should be made available for the heaviest bulk-density materials and for the extreme conditions of operation. If the loaded equipment is to be started from rest, there should be sufficient power for this. When speed variations may be desirable, this should be taken into account for power requirements planning. [Pg.242]

The amount of PTFE ranges typically from 5-30 wt% depending on cell design, cell material and operating conditions but there is no general rule for the optimum amount of PTFE in a GDL. [Pg.100]

Due to the difference in the tjqie, preparation method of material, and operating conditions, the nanoparticle size distribution of catalyst can vary in a great range such as from one nanometer (run) to tens of run, or even to hrmdreds of nm, and that of active metal catalyst is in the range of 1-10 run. [Pg.615]

The two-step strategy in the physical modeling of catalyst layer operation is depicted in Figure 3.5. The first step relates structure to the physical properties of the layer, considered as an effective medium. The second step relates these effective properties to electrochemical performance. Relations between structure and performance are complicated by the formation of liquid water, affecting effective properties and performance. Solutions for such a model provide relations between structure, properties, and performance. These relations allow predictions of architectures of materials and operating conditions that optimize catalyst layer and fuel cell operation to be made. [Pg.179]

In microreactors with FeCr alloy walls, is impacted more severely by the larger difference between gas and solid thermal conductivities, with the time required for steady state increasing by as much as 17.2% for Case 12 when gas-phase reactions are taken into account (compare with corresponding Case 25 in Table 8.2). Regardless of reactor material and operating conditions, the role of homogeneous chemistry in the start-up of methane-fueled catalytic microreactors is to elongate the steady-state times. [Pg.103]
