This is the place to start, since most often, analytical chemists are trying to help solve someone else s problem. We need to define the solute and its matrix as well as the nature of the analytical problem. For example, in the world of pharmaceuticals, there are raw material identification and purity determinations, in-process testing, dosage-form determinations, content uniformity, dissolution testing, stability studies, bioavailability, pharmacokinetics, and drug metabolism, to name a few. Each of these analytical problems has its own specific requirements. The matrix can be a raw material, granulation, tablet, capsule, solution, lotion, cream, syrup, dissolution medium, blood serum, urine, or various body tissues and fluids. Similar definitions can be described for virtually any industrial area and problem set. These definitions will help select sample preparation, separation, and detection techniques. 

Suitable physical, procedural and labelling arrangements should be made to prevent mix-up of materials, granules and tablets.

In conventional tabletting, powder particles are made to adhere with binding materials (granulation). Generally, the solutions of natural, semi-synthetic, or synthetic polymers are used for granulation (solutions of gelatine, cellulose ethers, and polyvinyl alcohol). 

A glass tube containing specific chemicals that have been impregnated on inert material granules and that will change color when chemicals in air are drawn through the tube. See also Draeger Tube . 

Bulk density n. The density of a particulate material (granules, powder, flakes, chopped fiber, etc.) expressed as the ratio of weight to total volume, voids included. 

Plastic granulators are used to regrind the used material. Granulators are available with various types of knives and sizes so scrap as thin as film and small parts may be reground, or the machine may be of a size to regrind large pipes, refrigerator doors, or similar massive parts. 

No special sample requirements (suitable for solid materials, granules, powders, emulsions, suspensions, swollen gels, etc.)... 

Conversely, their use as a departmental machine is quite frequently to be found in extrusion factories where the granules are either blended in a specific proportion or else they are used solely for a specific application where reduced output efficiency is accepted as a premium against the use of substandard material. Granulators are also used as the first stage in more complex recovery procedures.
