Carlos Chagas discovered a new flagellated pathogenic protozoan species, and named it Trypanosoma (Schizotrypanzonum) crnzi. The symptoms caused by this protozoan infection were first described for marmoset (Callithrix penicillata). After that, Berenice, a 2-year-old girl, was the first case of what would be considered a new human disease (Kropf and Sa, 2009 Scliar, 2002 Voelker, 2009 WHO, 2009).

Van Helden et al. Their face has little or no fur, but there can be large tufts of dense hair coming from the forehead. Most also have tufts of long hair around or from the ears, although the silvery marmoset Callithrix argentata) has bare ears.

Sixteen male and sixteen female common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) weighing 280-380 g had previously been trained to perform a task of visually guided reaching which is sensitive to motivational, attentional and motor disturbances (d Mello et al., 1985). In this task, animals learn to retrieve small items of preferred food from a moving conveyor belt positioned in front of their home cage and performance is gauged by the number of attempts that are made and their effectiveness in retrieving rewards.

Experimentally, however, hepatic iron overload has been described in animals fed high iron content diets. The results closest to humans are from a study in the common marmoset, Callithrix jacus [13]. In a group of seven marmosets fed a high iron content diet for 1 year, four deaths occurred, as opposed to one death in the group fed a low iron diet (Table 13-2).
