The oxidation rate of As(III) in the presence of manganese and water may be substantially enhanced by manganese-oxidizing bacteria, such as Leptothrix ochracea (Katsoyiannis, Zouboulis and Jekel, 2004). Katsoyiannis, Zouboulis and Jekel (2004) found that the bacteria are important in oxidizing Mn(II) to Mn(IV), Fe(II) to Fe(III), and As(III) to As(V). The oxidation of Mn(II) leads to the precipitation of Mn(IV) (oxy)(hydr)oxides, which then abiotically oxidize additional As(III) and significantly sorb the As(V) that results from both abiotic and biotic oxidation. [Pg.380]

Manganese-oxidizing bacteria could also be identified . As manganese in the sediments has to be reduced to Mn ions to become soluble and thus to get mobilized, the very important question arises how or where it is reoxidized. Generally, the bottom-near sea-water of Central Pacific is so rich in dissolved oxygen that manganese and iron will be oxidized when coming into the contact with sea-water (at the sediment-water interface and in the mobile, nearly liquid uppermost sediment layer). [Pg.122]

Manganese-oxidizing bacteria living on the sediment-water interface do not change the chemical processes which could also take place without them. They... [Pg.122]

Manganese-oxidizing bacteria and fungi have been detected in 70% of sediment samples from the Bay of Biscay and most samples from the North Sea (Krumbein, 1971). Ehrlich et al. (1972) found that on nodules from the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, 13 to 18% of the total bacteria were capable of oxidizing Mn(II), and over 50% were able to reduce Mn(IV) to Mn(II). Sorokin (1971) also found bacteria developing on manganese con-... [Pg.279]

It has been observed that organic particles settling through the hypolimnion of lakes become enriched with phosphorus (Gachter and Mares, 1985). The mechanism by which this occurs is still not completely clear, but seems to be related to adsorption of phosphate to mineral surfaces produced by iron-and manganese-oxidizing bacteria (Hupfer... [Pg.358]
