Manganese Matter

Impurities. Impurities usually found in manganese ore may be classified into metal oxides, eg, iron, 2inc, and copper gangue volatile matter such as water, carbon dioxide, and organic matter and other nonmetaUics. 

European matches, mosdy of brown or black tips, are basically identical with U.S. matches ia their formulations, except that they contain ia addition red iron oxide or manganese dioxide of pigment grade ia the match heads (2). Match materials, testing methods, and related matters have been reviewed (7,8). 

If the solution is allowed to flow through a granular bed such as sand, the larger particulate matter remains on the surface, while the smaller material is collected in the thickness of the granular bed. Pressurization of the filter accelerates the process. Besides sand, other materials used as filtering media are anthracites, manganese dioxide, and activated carbon. 

Removal of particulates, colloidal matter, iron and organics. Multimedia, manganese, greensand, diatomaceous earth, brim, or carbon filter. Caution carbon filters not recommended unless absolutely required for the removal of color and odor (as they provide a medium for microbial growth). 

Alloys are generally of the Al-Mg-Si type with additions of copper and chromium or manganese. Colour varies with the particular alloy and the film thickness. For optimum control of colour, the alloy must be carefully produced with strict attention to composition, homogenisation and heat-treatment, where appropriate, and the anodising conditions must be maintained within narrow limits. Raw water essentially should be free of suspended matter, natural organics, iron, manganese, and sulfur gases. Ideally, it should also be low in hardness, alkalinity, silica, and bacteria and have a pH level of approximately 7 to 8.

Soil pH affects the transformation of Cr between Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in soils. Since Cr(VI) has greater bioavailability and mobility in soils than Cr(III), which is strongly bound by soil solid matrix (Han and Banin, 1997). Cr(III) can be oxidized by soil manganese oxides into Cr(VI), while Cr(VI) can be reduced by organic matter, Fe(II) and microorganisms in soils. Reduction of Cr(VI) has been found to occur much slower in alkaline soils compared to acid soils (Cary et al., 1997).
