Management fees

The construction management option of an independent C.M. does not seem to offer any advantages to either large projects or small ones. It is essentially the same as the first two options, executed through lump sum subcontracts, with the disadvantage that the Owner must retain a C.M. and still assume the responsibility instead of the contractor. On small enough projects, the Owner should act as its own C.M. and save construction management fees. [Pg.186]

Note that the unrestricted fund is rather small in relation to the restricted fund -just about a quarter. As the vast majority of the fund is restricted and earmarked for specific projects, there is not much flexibility in allocating funds to relief projects in real time. Second, the overall management fee at 15.4% is quite high and is not balanced it accounts for a hefty 29.5% of the core resources but only 10.1% of the non-core resources. [Pg.264]

Issuance of a United States patent transforms a patent appHcant into a patentee, and new concerns may arise relevant to management. For example, the patent should be reviewed to determine formal and substantive correctness. An audit should be taken regularly to determine whether there is a continuing justification to pay the maintenance fees required to keep the patent in force during its effective period. The patentee or patent assignee may have to address concerns of patent infringement or patent vaHdity. [Pg.36]

To better understand managed care and the reasons for its growth, it is useful to discuss the evolution of payment mechanisms for health care from no insurance, to traditional indemnity insurance, to managed care. In the no-insurance model, the patient selects a health care provider and then pays the provider directly for health care goods and services. The choice of health care provider and the type and number of services provided are limited only by the financial constraints of the patient. The problem with this model is that the patient is exposed to potentially catastrophic health care expenses. Health insurance was developed as a way to protect patients against this risk. Health insurance often is provided through the employer and prior to the mid-1980s was likely to be indemnity fee-for-service insurance. In this traditional insurance... [Pg.795]

Health maintenance organizations are the most restrictive type of managed care organization, and consumer dissatisfaction with restricted choice in HMOs likely was a significant factor in the growth of point of service (POS) plans. POS plans sometimes are referred to as open-ended HMOs. Like HMOs, enrollees typically select a primary care provider and pay no fee or a small copayment to see participating providers. POS plans differ from HMOs in that patients can receive coverage from physicians outside the network. However, patients pay more for care received from physicians outside the network and often must pay the full... [Pg.797]
