Spreading work around the world means that companies have to rely heavily on their formal decision-making processes there is less opportunity for person-to-person interaction. Yet it is just such interactions that are invaluable in risk management work, particularly with regard to the identification and assessment of hazards. The more the organization is spread, the greater the belief that process is all and that no special, subjective skills are required. [Pg.150]

As has been stressed throughout this book, risk has both objective and subjective elements. The objective part of the work means that those working in the area of risk management need to be numerate they need to be comfortable with a variety of quantitative topics such as gas dispersion modeling, the development of F—N curves, and the use of Boolean algebra. [Pg.735]

One means of gathering data for monitor indicators is patient safety culture questionnaires. We have developed a patient safety culture questionnaire, TUKU, that measures employees perceptions of the organisational functions depicted in Table 9.4 as well as employees psychological states, such as sense of control and worry about patient safety (Reiman et al. 2013). In one hospital, the results of the questionnaire were compared with the ratio of patient safety incidents at the hospital s 40 units 16 months after the safety culture questionnaire was administered. The results, which must be treated with caution due to the small sample size, indicated that perceptions of work process management , work conditions management . [Pg.194]

There are some positively horrible verbal concoctions in widespread use for process plant work, for instance deliverables , which is intended to mean those products of engineering and management work which can be delivered as documentation. No apology is offered for the omission of such slaughter of the English language from these pages, but this is a widely used term that needs to be understood. [Pg.316]

Desire to Be Independent Yet Collaborate. Technical professionals are achievement-oriented and derive motivation from the work itself. This often means a need for increased participation in decision-making, as well as a natural skepticism and resistance to rapid changes in direction and tight control by managers. Collaboration and the desire for some form of teamwork also are a part of the professional s nature. [Pg.132]

The standard doesn t require a procedure for Management Review and while it does require procedures for Design Control it does not specify that a Design Review Procedure is required. The phrases consistent with and in accordance with have the same meaning as both imply compatibility and agreement. If you restrict yourself to a literal interpretation of the standard, you need produce no more than 43 documented procedures - possibly less if some aspects do not apply to your business. You can combine several procedures in one document, the size of which depends on the complexity of your business. The more complex the business the greater the number of quality system documents. The more variations in the ways that work is executed, the larger the quality system will need to be. If you have a small business and only one way of carry-... [Pg.180]

An inventory management system should be established - meaning set up on a permanent basis to meet defined inventory policies and objectives approved by executive management. It should be documented - meaning that there should be a description of the system, how it works, the assignment of responsibilities, the codification of best practice, procedures, and instructions. The system should be planned, organized, and controlled in order that it achieves its purpose. A person should therefore be appointed with responsibility for the inventory management system and the responsibilities of those who work the system should be defined and documented. Records should be created and maintained that show how order quantities have been calculated in order that the calculations can be verified and repeated if necessary with new data. The records should also provide adequate data for continual improvement initiatives to be effective. [Pg.480]

A useful way to approach this is to develop your proposal (1) as if key managers are unable to participate in a meeting, but request a full briefing, or (2) as though you have a sudden emergency and a colleague must stand in for you. This means you cannot rely on brief, cryptic bullet points on an overhead slide, or fall back on "I ll cover that in the Q and A." This approach means more work on the front end, but the discipline it requires is likely to pay off in terms of results since it helps assure comprehensive treatment of the subject and a more thorough appreciation from your audience. [Pg.15]

Put the system Into practice. Pilot sites will be selected in collaboration with facility management, to test the new PSM system. By this means, we can assure that the system works and identify any areas needing refinement, in a cost-effective manner. [Pg.33]
