The National Toxicology Program (NTP) reported on tests on mice and rats that there was an increase in the spontaneous incidence of benign tumors in male and female rats and an increase in malignant Hver and lung tumors in B6C3E1 mice. NTP concluded that these data demonstrated clear evidence of carcinogenicity in mice and female rats and some evidence in male rats (35).

Though vinca alkaloids are useful in platelet and platelet-associated disorders, it is in treating malignancy that they are truly an indispensable part of the pharmacopoeia. First available in the 1960s, vinca alkaloids now are included as part of virtually every successful combination chemotherapy program, both because of their unique action and because of their unique toxicities.

Accelerated hypertension - Nicotine therapy constitutes a risk factor for development of malignant hypertension in patients with accelerated hypertension. Inhaler therapy should be used with caution in these patients and only when the benefits of including nicotine replacement in a smoking cessation program outweigh the risks. 

In a study based on the Los Angeles County, United States, Cancer Surveillance Program, white male chemists with malignant melanoma and with other cancers (used as controls) were interviewed (Wright et al., 1983). Four of the seven chemists with malignant melanoma gave a history of exposure to benzoyl peroxide (among many other chemicals) and none of the nine controls.
