Male children

The clinical picture in male children can closely resemble Duchenne-type muscular dystrophy in adults, it mimics limb-girdle dystrophy or polymyositis. The early and severe involvement of respiratory muscles in most patients with AMD is a distinctive clinical clue. Respiratory failure and pulmonary infection are the most common causes of death. [Pg.699]

Obesity increases steadily with age in the under 60s. However, obesity is affecting younger people more than ever before. In the USA, there was an increase in prevalence of overweight (at or above the 95th percentile of sex-specific BMI for age growth charts) in female children and adolescents from 13.8% in 1999-2000 to 16.0% in 2003-2004 and an increase in male children and adolescents from 14.0% to 18.2% in the same time period. Similarly, in the UK, although the figures are lower, the prevalence of obesity in 5-10 year... [Pg.123]

Trazodone has been used therapeutically, but because of low potency and marked sedative effects, its use has been mostly restricted to a sleeping aid in doses of 50-100 mg at bedtime. It has been routinely used in adults on SSRIs, who develop sleep problems. The concern about priapism even at low doses may reduce enthusiasm for its use in male children and adolescents. [Pg.302]

Patients with 11/1-hydroxylase deficiency present with features of androgen excess, including masculinization of female newborns and precocious puberty in male children. There are two human isozymes that are responsible for cortisol and aldosterone synthesis, respectively. The CYP11B1 enzyme (p45011B) converts DOC to corticosterone (B) and 11-deoxycortisol (S or 11-dihydrocortisol) to cortisol (F). It is also capable of 18-hydroxylating DOC but cannot convert to aldosterone. The latter transformation is carried out by CYP11B2 (also known as aldosterone synthase), which encompasses activity for 18-hydroxylation and subsequent 18-oxidation. When CAH is associated with hypertension, deficient lljS-hydroxylase (CYP11B1) is suspected at this time more than ten mutations have been defined in affected individuals [103]. [Pg.584]

TA genetic lack of hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase activity, seen almost exclusively in male children, results in a bizarre set of symptoms called Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. Children with this genetic disorder, which becomes manifest by the age of 2 years, are sometimes poorly coordinated and mentally retarded. In addition, they are extremely hostile and show compulsive self-destructive tendencies they mutilate themselves by biting off their fingers, toes, and lips. [Pg.875]

Gender The majority (68%) of the incidents occurred to male children. The discrepancy in gender is more noticeable after the age of eight. [Pg.2011]

It s common that children who are poor have higher levels of depression and antisocial behavior.72 This is not a problem unique to America. In Australia, for example, the more often families experience low income, the higher the rate of child behavior problems at age 5.73 Comparable correlations are found nearly everywhere. Prenatal impacts may be one cause. Another cause may be the child s postnatal experience of maternal depression produced by poverty. Owing to social constraints, female children are more likely to remain in poverty than male children. Later, these female children become pregnant and the cycle of impacts begins again. [Pg.291]

To fully appreciate the role played by the medical profession in the manufacture of masturbatory insanity, I shall cite the advice pven by an American woman physician in 1903 to mothers regarding the sex education of their male children. Go, teach your boy, exhorts Mary Melendy, that which you may never be ashamed to do, about these organs that make him specially a boy. Teach him they are called sexual organs, that they are not impure, but of... [Pg.193]

Propecia effectively lowers the plasma level of dihydrotestosterone (see also problem 7). But dihydrotestosterone is an important embryonic androgen that instigates the development and differeniation of the male phenotype. Pregnant women who had contact with Propecia therefore would risk developmental abnormalities for their unborn male children. [Pg.479]

Early and persistent antisocial behavior—Male children who are a ressive in primary grades (K-3) are at greater risk for substance abuse. When aggressive behavior is combined with isolation, hyperactivity, or attention deficit disorder, the risk is even greater for adolescent substance abuse. This risk factor includes persistent problem behaviors in early adolescence, such as skipping school and fighting. [Pg.103]

Tables 7.4 and 7.5 present the calculated daily inhalation rates and deposition rates for Pb at a time of maximum air Pb in the 1970s and then in 1994, when air Pb concentrations had essentially declined to their lowest levels. The pronounced distinctions in inhaled and deposited Pb in children at these two time points are striking, showing a 20-fold or more decline in deposition rates for urban areas. Again, the air Pb declines and associated inhaled and deposited Pb reflected the leaded gasoline ban in the United States and other industrialized nations. Daily inhaled Pb is deposited in various parts of the respiratory tract at a rate of 30% for children and adults (U.S. EPA, 1986, Ch. 10). Male children show a somewhat higher daily deposition rate than females. While the tables are for U.S. estimates, the values for air Pb outside the United States and those that are tabulated in Chapter 6 would show similar results.
