Natrosol is soluble in most 10% salt solutions, excluding sodium carbonate and sodium sulfate, and many 50% salt solutions with the exception of the following aluminum sulfate ammonium sulfate diammonium phosphate disodium phosphate ferric chloride magnesium sulfate potassium ferrocyanide sodium metaborate sodium nitrate sodium sulfite trisodium phosphate and zinc sulfate. The first step, the formation of sodium metaborate from borax and sodium hydroxide, is carried out at temperatures up to 90°C. When impure borax is used the solution is filtered. The second step is carried out at 25 °C and the mixture subsequently cooled to 15°C and the precipitated sodium peroxoborate hexahydrate filtered off. Stabilizers for the perborate, such as silicates or magnesium salts, may be added to the reaction mixture. Residual moisture (3 to 10%) is removed in a hot air drier. Borax is dissolved in sodium hydroxide solution to make sodium metaborate (NaB02) solution. When the native mineral is used, this step is followed by decantation or filtration. The NaB02 solution is then mixed with H2O2 in a cooled reactor under carefully controlled conditions to produce attrition-resistant crystals. This leads to the crystallization of PBS4. Stabilizers are added either before or after the crystallization stage to improve storage and in-pack stability.
