Because pure aluminum is n picaUy too soft to be drawn into a fine wine, it is often alloyed with 1° o sihcon or 1° o magnesium to provide a sofid solution-strengthening mechanism. Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), a nonionic thickening agent, is prepared from alkali cellulose and ethylene oxide in the presence of isopropyl alcohol (46). HEC is used in drilling muds, but more commonly in completion fluids where its acid-degradable nature is advantageous. Solution Process. With the exception of fibrous triacetate, practically all cellulose acetate is manufactured by a solution process using sulfuric acid catalyst with acetic anhydride in an acetic acid solvent. An excellent description of this process is given (85). In the process (Fig. 8), cellulose (ca 400 kg) is treated with ca 1200 kg acetic anhydride in 1600 kg acetic acid solvent and 28—40 kg sulfuric acid (7—10% based on cellulose) as catalyst. During the exothermic reaction, the temperature is controlled at 40—45°C to minimize cellulose degradation. After the reaction solution becomes clear and fiber-free and the desired viscosity has been achieved, sufficient aqueous acetic acid (60—70% acid) is added to destroy the excess anhydride and provide 10—15% free water for hydrolysis. At this point, the sulfuric acid catalyst may be partially neutralized with calcium, magnesium, or sodium salts for better control of product molecular weight. [Pg.254]

Solid absorbents such as Hydromatrix, Extrelut " anhydrous magnesium sulfate or absorbent polymers are required to control the level of water in the sample for the extraction of the nonpolar pesticides. This wastewater stream contains lead (Pb) salts and chlorinated hydrocarbons generated from corrosion of the anodes as well as asbestos particles generated as a result of degradation of the diaphragm with use. Wastewater is also generated from the scrubber where the chlorine is wet scrubbed and from the ion exchange resin used to purify the brine solution. These wash water often contains dilute hydrochloric acid with small amounts of dissolved calcium magnesium and aluminum chloride. Many acrylic acid copolymers are water-soluble but unlike poly(vinyl alcohol) they are not degraded by alkali. In fact they need alkali for effective desizing as they are more soluble at alkaline pH than in neutral solutions. They are sensitive to acidic media, which should not be used. Solubilisation occurs by the formation of sodium carboxylate groups from the anionic polyacid. The polyelectrolyte formed in this way is readily soluble and shows a rapid rate of dissolution.
