One of the main problems of topical application of vitamin C is that it is extremly unstable, so hydrophilic derivatives like sodium ascorbyl phosphate and lipophilic esters with fatty acids were synthesized to improve stability.43,44 However, an efficient increase in vitamin C levels after topical application of different ascorbic acid derivatives including magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl-6-palmitate, and dehydroascorbic acid to porcine skin could not be shown.42...

Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (6) was used as reference compound for the RP-HPLC-UVD determination of sodium risedronate (68) in pharmaceutical preparations . Co(II) reacts with 2,2 -bipyridylketone-2-picolylimine in the presence of Na L-ascorbate in a weakly alkaline solution to form a blue water-soluble complex with the absorption maximum at ca 580 nm. The absorbance at 580 nm is proportional to the concentration of Co(II) in the range 0.05-2.5 mg L , with RSD = 0.46%. Ni(II) and Cu(II) were tolerated up to 20 and 10 mg L , respectively, in the presence of Na citrate . 

Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (MAP) is more effective than ascorbyl palmitate (AP), as the protection of its active function by esterification protects the MAP against oxidation and provides an antioxidant effect that is of better quality and longer lasting than that of ascorbyl palmitate, a molecule in which the enediol function of the 2 carbon atom is not protected by esterification. 

For example, the possibihty of including products in liposomes, cyclodextrins, nanosomes or multilayers and using specific molecules such as arbutin, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, etc.

Vitamins (see Section 8.6), often added to cosmetic formulations, act as antioxidant preservatives due to their general antioxidant properties towards free radicals. Examples are retinol (vitamin A) and its precursor j5-carotene, tocopherol (vitamin E) and ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Moreover, vitamin derivatives, such as retinyl acetate, retinyl palmitate, ascorbyl palmitate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate and tocopheryl acetate among others, are also employed as antioxidant agents. 

Some derivatives of vitamin C, e.g. sodium ascorbyl phosphate, have the benefit of being stable in cosmetic formulations and exerting the favourable effects of vitamin C when applied on the skin. The most commonly used are salts of ascorbic acid sodium or magnesium ascorbate, sodium or magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl glucoside and ascorbyl pahnitate.
