Made in Germany

Metallurgy. Lithium forms alloys with numerous metals. Early uses of lithium alloys were made in Germany with the production of the lead alloy, BahnmetaH (0.04% Li), which was used for bearings for railroad cars, and the aluminum alloy, Scleron. In the United States, the aluminum alloy X-2020 (4.5% Cu, 1.1% Li, 0.5% Mn, 0.2% Cd, balance Al) was introduced in 1957 for stmctural components of naval aircraft. The lower density and stmctural strength enhancement of aluminum lithium alloys compared to normal aluminum alloys make it attractive for uses in airframes. A distinct lithium—aluminum phase (Al Li) forms in the alloy which bonds tightly to the host aluminum matrix to yield about a 10% increase in the modules of elasticity of the aluminum lithium alloys produced by the main aluminum producers. The density of the alloys is about 10% less than that of other stmctural aluminum alloys. 

In 1989 BASE announced its intention to market in the United States a polysulfone, Ultrason S, and a polyethersulfone, Ultrason E. Both materials would likely be made in Germany. World consumption and prices of polysulfones are given in Table 12. 

Experiments in the selection of poppies for morphine production have also been made in Germany by Kiissner. The yields from capsules of two selections, over two years, were morphine 0-257 to 0-544 per cent, and codeine 0-011 to 0-029 per cent. From seven commercial varieties grown in plots of 50 square metres, the yields in grammes per square metre were seeds 141 to 200, capsules 65 to 116, morphine 0-123 to 0-471 and non-phenolic bases (codeine, thebaine, papaverine, narcotine, etc.) 0-043 to 0-131.

Thus, the impressive size of BASF s Fine Chemical Division is due to a BASF-specific definition of the term fine chemicals.
