Macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) stimulates the growth and differentiation of the monocyte lineage, and promotes the survival, proliferation, and functions of mature monocytes/macrophages (1). It also enhances myelopoiesis through the amplified production of G-CSF and GM-CSF by monocytes, and has antitumor activity. Purified human urinary M-CSF and recombinant human M-CSF are under investigation in humans. 

Functional subpopulations of Th cells are distinguished by discrete cytokine secretion profiles. While both populations in mice produce granulocyte/ macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and interleukin-3 (IL-3), only Thl cells secrete interferon - / (TFN - 7) and interleukin-2 (IL-2) and only Th2 cells produce interleukins-4, 5, 6 and 10 (IL-4, IL-5, IL-6 and IL-10) (Mosmann and Coffman, 1989 Mosmann et al., 1991).
