Machinability of the material to be processed is an important issue with regard to surface roughness, surface integrity, tool life, cutting forces and power requirements. Machinability is expressed in terms of a machinability index for the material. 

Machinability index for a material is expressed as a percentage based on the relative ease of machining a material with respect to free cutting mild steel which is 100 per cent and taken as the standard. 

A process capability chart showing the achievable dimensional tolerances for milling and a chart for positional tolerance capability of CNC milling centers are provided (see 4.2CC). Note, the tolerances on the milling process capability chart are greatly influenced by the machinability index for the material used. 

GORE. The CORE Electronic Chemistry Library is a joint project of Cornell University, OCLC (On-line Computer Library Center), Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), and the American Chemical Society. The CORE database will contain the full text of American Chemical Society Journals from 1980, associated information from Chemical Abstracts Service, and selected reference texts. It will provide machine-readable text that can be searched and displayed, graphical representations of equations and figures, and full-page document images. The project will examine the performance obtained by the use of a traditional printed index as compared with a hypertext system (SUPERBOOK) and a document retrieval system (Pixlook) (6,116).

Manufacturers of various types of mills maintain laboratories in which grindability tests are made to determine the suitability of their machines. When grindability comparisons are made on sm equipment of the manufacturers own class, there is a basis for scale-up to commercial equipment. This is better than relying on a grindabihty index obtained in a ball mih to estimate the size and capacity of different types such as hammer or jet mihs. 

The standard melt flow index machine is often used for characterising the flow properties of polypropylene and to provide a rough measure of molecular weight. Under the conditions normally employed for polyethylene (2.16 kg load at 190°C) the flow rate is too low for accurate measurement and in practice higher loads, e.g. 10 kg, and/or higher temperatures are used. It has been found that a considerable pressure drop exists in the barrel so that the flow towards the end of a test run is higher than at the beginning.
