The powder s flow properties are also important because they control the physical processes that are used to manipulate the material. Carrs s index, which is a measure of powder bulk density and angle of repose, provides information on flow properties, which are important when production utilises high-speed tableting machines.

A large difference between the two indices may predict sensitivity to scale-up of the tableting process relating to dwell time of the machine. This tendency, is described as the VI, as shown in Equation (4). However, no correlation of this index to scale-up has been shown to date in the literature.
