M-Octyl alcohol

Octyl alcohol [111-87-5] M 130.2, b 98 /19mm, 195.3°/760mm, d 0.828, n 1.43018. Fractionally distd under reduced pressure. Dried with sodium and again fractionally distd or refluxed with boric anhydride and distd (b 195-205°/5mm), the distillate being neutralised with NaOH and again fractionally distd. Also purified by distn from Raney nickel and by preparative GLC. [Pg.291]

Prior to reduction with sodium borohydride, octyl alcohol can be added to avoid foaming. Then a solution of 0.05-0.06 M sodium borohydride in either water or 0.001 N sodium hydroxide is added in equal aliquots until roughly a 100-fold molar excess has been added. After each addition, the pH of the reaction mixture should be readjusted to the initial acidic pH by the addition of either acetic acid or hydrochloric acid. The temperatures of the reaction mixture have ranged from 4-25°C. The modified protein can then be isolated either by precipitation, dialysis or gel filtration under conditions where the native protein is normally stable. [Pg.133]

In solution with low alkali concentration, Eu extraction is appreciably dependent on the nature of the diluent. The distribution coefficients decrease with increasing dielectric constant in the order cyclohexane toluene chloroform octyl alcohol. Extraction of Eu from 5 M NaOH is 99% whatever the diluent (except for octyl alcohol). This means that extraction from very alkaline media is favour of coordinatively-saturated compounds. [Pg.113]
