M-discontinuity

Initial results from the analysis of P- to S-wave converted phases (Ps) from the M-discontinuity were reported by Nguuri et al. (2001) and are summarized below. The results reported by Nguuri et al. were based upon 35 teleseisms processed at 75 stations (Fig. 9) to yield a comprehensive set of high-quality receiver funetions (see Ammon (1991) for review and other references to receiver function techniques). Figure 3 presents the dependence of the modulus of the e.m.f induced in the pick-up coil, on the distance between the transducer and the discontinuity, obtained both theoretically using the Rel. (6) and experimentally. The working fi equency is 5 kHz. The transducer has been balanced for a material zone far from the discontinuity. The modulus of the output e.m.f of the utilized control equipment was devided by the overall gain of the measuring chain, to directly obtain the transducer output voltage. [Pg.377]

The are essentially adjustable parameters and, clearly, unless some of the parameters in A2.4.70 are fixed by physical argument, then calculations using this model will show an improved fit for purely algebraic reasons. In principle, the radii can be fixed by using tables of ionic radii calculations of this type, in which just the A are adjustable, have been carried out by Friedman and co-workers using the HNC approach [12]. Further rermements were also discussed by Friedman [F3], who pointed out that an additional temi is required to account for the fact that each ion is actually m a cavity of low dielectric constant, e, compared to that of the bulk solvent, e. A real difficulty discussed by Friedman is that of making the potential continuous, since the discontinuous potentials above may lead to artefacts. Friedman [F3] addressed this issue and derived... [Pg.583]

For both first-order and continuous phase transitions, finite size shifts the transition and rounds it in some way. The shift for first-order transitions arises, crudely, because the chemical potential, like most other properties, has a finite-size correction p(A)-p(oo) C (l/A). An approximate expression for this was derived by Siepmann et al [134]. Therefore, the line of intersection of two chemical potential surfaces Pj(T,P) and pjj T,P) will shift, in general, by an amount 0 IN). The rounding is expected because the partition fiinction only has singularities (and hence produces discontinuous or divergent properties) in tlie limit i—>oo otherwise, it is analytic, so for finite Vthe discontinuities must be smoothed out in some way. The shift for continuous transitions arises because the transition happens when L for the finite system, but when i oo m the infinite system. The rounding happens for the same reason as it does for first-order phase transitions whatever the nature of the divergence in thennodynamic properties (described, typically, by critical exponents) it will be limited by the finite size of the system. [Pg.2266]

The UIIF wnive fimction can also apply to singlet molecules. F sn-ally, the results are the same as for the faster RHF method. That is, electron s prefer to pair, with an alpha electron sh arin g a m olecu lar space orbital with a beta electron. L se the L lIF method for singlet states only to avoid potential energy discontinuities when a covalent bond Is broken and electron s can impair (see Bond Breaking on page 46). [Pg.37]

Metal-Matrix Composites. A metal-matrix composite (MMC) is comprised of a metal ahoy, less than 50% by volume that is reinforced by one or more constituents with a significantly higher elastic modulus. Reinforcement materials include carbides, oxides, graphite, borides, intermetahics or even polymeric products. These materials can be used in the form of whiskers, continuous or discontinuous fibers, or particles. Matrices can be made from metal ahoys of Mg, Al, Ti, Cu, Ni or Fe. In addition, intermetahic compounds such as titanium and nickel aluminides, Ti Al and Ni Al, respectively, are also used as a matrix material (58,59). P/M MMC can be formed by a variety of full-density hot consolidation processes, including hot pressing, hot isostatic pressing, extmsion, or forging. [Pg.191]

A function is said to be piecewise continuous on an intei val if it has only a finite number of finite (or jump) discontinuities. A function/on 0 < f < oo is said to be of exponential growth at infinity if there exist constants M and Ot such that l/(t)l < for sufficiently large t. [Pg.462]

A similar incident occurred on a boiler. After the No. 1 roof tube had failed several times, it was replaced by a thicker tube, and the change marked on the drawings. Some time later a small leak developed in this tube, and a length had to be replaced. No one looked at the drawings, and a 0.5 m length of standard tube was welded in. The discontinuity caused turbulence, local overheating, and rapid failure [24]. [Pg.56]
