Lysimeters Terms

The site water balance for an ET landfill cover is illustrated in Figure 25.4. The incoming water (P +1) should equal the outgoing water (ET + Q + L + ASW + PRK). Where all terms are measured, for example, lysimeter measurements—the difference or lack of balance is an expression of measurement error. 

Lateral flow (L) within the soil layer containing plant roots is small for most landfill cover situations and is zero for lysimeters with sidewalls. During the course of a hydrologic year, ASW is usually small in comparison to the other terms, but it may be large on a daily basis. A primary focus for the design is PRK below the ET landfill cover as represented by the rearranged equation ... 

Ross et al. [6] analysed samples of soil leachates from laboratory columns and of soil pore water from field porous cup lysimeters for aluminium by atomic absorption spectrometry under two sets of instrumental conditions. Method 1 employed uncoated graphite tubes and wall atomisation method 2 employed a graphite furnace with a pyrolytically coated platform and tubes. Aluminium standards were prepared and calibration curves used for the colorimetric quantification of aluminium. Method 1 gave results which compared favourably with method 2 in terms of both sensitivity and interference reduction for samples containing 1-15 uM aluminium. 

One may consider, for instance, the determination of a melting point as a truly short-term study, because the whole experimental activity is terminated within a few minutes, and nobody would object to calling such a study short-term . But what about an environmental fate study in a lysimeter There the test item is applied to the test system (an activity taking a few minutes), then the whole system is left undisturbed for two years, after which the distribution of the test item in the column of soil is determined, again an activity of a few days at most. Is this a two year, long-term study, or has it to be labelled short-term , because for 99.9 % of the time the test system is just left alone with no experimental activity whatsoever occurring ...

The EEC contract work includes the continuation of several large scale lysimeter experiments at the Water Quality Institute, in which pulverized coal ashes and flue gas desulfurization products are exposed to rainwater infiltratioa The percolate is collected through drains at the bottom of the lysimeters. These experiments now mnning for 6 years allow for a comparison between laboratory and field eonditions in the short term (LS=l-2, at present). Detailed information on the eonstraetion, collection scheme, analyses of percolates, and interpretation of the first 3 years of data collection is given in ref [16]. For comparison field data on actual ash disposal sites [17] and ash appUcations [18] are given.
