Lumber, scrap

As a stmctural element to support paneling and wall mounts, there is growing iaterest ia the use of plastic lumber produced usiag the recycled scrap or waste of polyethyleae (HDPE), polypropyleae, and PET materials from various packagiag and other high turnover appHcations (12,17,18,21,23,24,32,34,44,62,68-71). [Pg.335]

Everything went into his homemade laboratory, a basement corner he had walled off with scrap lumber. Linus had been obsessed with chemistry ever since his best friend, Lloyd Jeffress, had demonstrated some reactions with a toy chemistry set a year earlier. Linus always remembered one trick his friend had done, in which he mixed some sugar and another chemical together, added a drop of acid—and the sugar burst into flame. At the same moment, so did... [Pg.12]

As illustrated, shelves at the back will finish your lab table. They can be a set of book shelves, also bought very cheaply second-hand or can be built with 1 X 12 inch scrap lumber. [Pg.5]

The authors decided to focus their attention on using recycled material, developing a particle board made out of chips from scrap lumber. In order to impart the necessary degree of rigidity to this material, glass fiber reinforcement was developed. Its effective use to make fonn material (referred to as chip form below) contributes to the protection of forests because it obviates the need to use materials derived from lauan or conifer. [Pg.177]

Residential construction waste is madeup of 42% wood, 26% drywall, 11% masonry, 4% cardboard, 2% metals, and 15% other materials.289 Roughly 80% of this waste can be recycled. The key is in segregating the wastes on site. This can be done by the contractor, the subcontractor, or a cleanup company. Some scrap lumber can be used as braces, in the new dwelling. The rest can be handled as in the foregoing for chipboard. One way that has been used to keep it out of the landfill is to put it in a pile at the edge of the site with... [Pg.422]

Potential sources of non-occupational human exposure to creosote include contact with creosote-treated wood products (e.g., railroad ties used for landscaping), incineration of creosote-treated scrap lumber, and contact with contaminated environmental media at hazardous waste sites (e.g., ingestion of contaminated ground water). At the Koppers Company, Inc. NPL site in Texarkana, Texas, where a creosote wood treatment facility existed for 51 years prior to being converted to a residential area and an industrial site (sand and gravel company), a study by the Texas Department of Health found an increased incidence of skin rashes in residents who had dermal contact with soil at the site (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry 1994). [Pg.268]

This book summarizes information on plastics recycling based on studies conducted for the state of Illinois. Part I discusses characterization, collection, costs, and markets for mixed plastics recycling. Part li discusses recycling technologies, Including those for processing and separation, buyer specifications, and the manufacture of plastic lumber. Appendices Include lists of scrap plastic handlers and brokers, manufacturers of recycling equipment, and information sources. [Pg.59]

By far, wood particles are the major raw material source used for manufacturing WPCs. Wood particles can originate from sawdust, planer shavings, short solid pieces of lumber, conventional wood composite scrap [6], and scrap pallets [12], Both softwoods and hardwoods can be used for WPC production. Currently, most WPCs using softwoods are made with southern yellow pine, while WPCs produced with hardwoods are made with oak, maple, or aspen. The anatomical features as well as physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of softwoods and hardwoods differ considerably among species, and may affect the wood-polymer interface, and, as a consequence, the composite s properties and performance. [Pg.495]

Most of the charcoal supplied to pyrotechnists in this country is coniferous wood charcoal, most of which is made from sawdust and sawmill scrap. It is often called hardwood charcoal for the reason that hardwood charcoal brings a better price in industries where it is used for filtration. The hardwood charcoal is preferred in filtration because it does not crumble as easily in handling. The building and lumber industry use different woods in different areas of the country and the regional scrap and waste differences are fairly consistent. [Pg.14]

As mentioned, one application for recycled commingled plastics is in plastic lumber. The plastic lumber business has grown rapidly in the last five years. Not aU plastic lumber is made using recycled plastics, but much of it is. Some companies using recycled plastics for plastic lumber use mixed plastics, and others use relatively pure streams of material. Some use primarily postconsumer materials, while others use mostly industrial scrap. [Pg.544]
