Lubricants are used in tablet preparation and include magnesium stearate, stearic acid and polyethylene glycol. They only comprise at most 1-2% of the tablet bulk so that their potential to interfere is slight, particularly since their chromophores are weak. The fatty acid lubricants can often be observed if analysis of a tablet extract is carried out by GC-FID. Tablet coatings are often based on modified sugar polymers such as hydroxypropylmethylcellulose. These coatings are used at about 3% of the tablet bulk, are water soluble and do not absorb UV light. 

The quantity of each of the final homogeneous fractions of both in water-white oil and extract oil portions was about 15 grams, representing V oooth part of the original crude petroleum from which it came, and consisted of compounds of substantially similar sizes and types. Murray [91] has described a gas chromatographic method for the determination in water of triarylphosphate esters (lmol S-140, tricresyl phosphate, cresol phosphate). These substances are used commercially as lubricant oil and plastic additives, hydraulic fluids and plasticisers. The method involves extraction from the samples, hydrolysis and measurement of the individual phenols by gas chromatography as the trimethylsilyl derivatives. The lower detection limit was about 3ppm.
