Low temperature resistance

Extmsion of polyethylene and some polypropylenes is usually through a circular die into a tubular form, which is cut and collapsed into flat film. Extmsion through a linear slot onto chilled rollers is called casting and is often used for polypropylene, polyester, and other resins. Cast, as well as some blown, films may be further heated and stretched in the machine or in transverse directions to orient the polymer within the film and improve physical properties such as tensile strength, stiffness, and low temperature resistance. [Pg.453]

Selection of the right elastomer has to take iato account not only the low temperature resistance, the elastic properties, and mechanical properties, but also price, which can vary widely ia specialty elastomers. [Pg.477]

Low-temperature resistance measurements do not differ in principle from room temperature ones they can be carried out both in d.c. (carachteristographers) or in a.c. (bridges). [Pg.223]

Refined niobium metal is most useful as an alloy with other metals. It is used to produce special stainless steel alloys, to make high-temperature magnets, as special metals for rockets and missiles, and for high- and low-temperature-resistant ceramics. Stainless steel that has been combined with niobium is less hkely to break down under very high temperatures. This physical attribute is ideal for construction of both land- and sea-based nuclear reactors. [Pg.126]

The possibility of modifying polypropylene by extrusion at 220° C in the presence of alkaline sulphate lignin and a plasticizer to increase the low temperature resistance was also studied (96). The modifying effect of the lignin appears to be due to its rupture into free radicals which may cause crosslinking of the polypropylene macromolecules. The polypropylene which was modified (Propolin) is used to make films which have increased low temperature and light resistance. [Pg.61]

Specialty materials offer properties or combinations of properties not available in any other class of materials. With extreme high temperature and low temperature resistance, extreme chemical resistance and stability over a wide range of operating conditions, these materials perform where no others can. [Pg.277]

Apart from being simply measures of how much a rubber creeps, relaxes or sets under any given conditions, these tests can also be used as measures of ageing characteristics, low temperature resistance or resistance to chemicals. These other applications of the tests are not generally considered in this chapter but it is impossible to make a complete distinction. In particular, set tests commonly used as a quality control tool involve heat... [Pg.201]

Both approaches have been found to account adequately for the effects of solution iR drop in the analysis of voltammetric data. It is apparent that it is necessary to know the resistivity of the solution for the solvent, electrolyte, and temperature used in the experiments. Low-temperature resistivities of various electrolytes in acetone [7], acetonitrile [7,25,45], butyronitrile [7,25,45], N,N-dimethylformamide [7], and propionitrile [25,45], as well as butyronitrile/ethyl chloride and butyronitrile/ethyl bromide mixtures [25], have been published. Reference to these works prior to selection of solvent and electrolyte could save the inconvenience of determining the resistivity of another system that might be selected. [Pg.508]

It is evident that the double layers at the grain boundaries constitute Schottky barriers which are similar in some respects to those formed in VDR resistors. In accord with this it is found that the resistivity-temperature relation of PTC material is voltage sensitive. The low-temperature resistivity may be reduced by a factor of 4 by an increase in applied field from 1 to 80kVm-1, and the ratio of maximum to minimum resistivities, above and below Tc, may be reduced from five to three orders of magnitude. [Pg.169]

Recent developments in ADMET polymerization and its use in materials preparation have been presented. Due to the mild nature of the polymerization and the ease of monomer synthesis, ADMET polymers have been incorporated into various materials and functionaUzed hydrocarbon polymers. Modeling industrial polymers has proven successful, and continues to be appUed in order to study polyethylene structure-property relationships. Ethylene copolymers have also been modeled with a wide range of comonomer contents and absolutely no branching. Increased metathesis catalyst activity and functional group tolerance has allowed polymer chemists to incorporate amino acids, peptides, and various chiral materials into metathesis polymers. Sihcon incorporation into hydrocarbon-based polymers has been achieved, and work continues toward the application of latent reactive ADMET polymers in low-temperature resistant coatings. [Pg.37]

The yeasts used in the second fermentation should also present a series of characteristics such as fermentative activity at low temperature, resistance to ethanol and to CO2 pressure, flocculation potential etc. (Bidan et al. 1986 Martfnez-Rodrfguez et al. 2001a). [Pg.63]

Adimoll DO is a low-temperature-resistant plasticizer suitable for a large number of polymers, e.g. polyvinyl chloride (PVC), acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), styrenebutadiene rubber (SBR) and polyvinyl acetate (PVAC). Commonly used in plastic wraps for food storage. [Pg.188]

Used as low-temperature-resistant and low-viscosity plasticizer for PVC and its copolymers and cellulose esters, e.g., cellulose acetate butyrate, and cellulose propionates. May be found in eyeglass frames, safety goggles, animal collars, decorative trims and various types of film. [Pg.292]

Polypropylene is somewhat similar to HDPE in general properties. It exists as a homopolymer and a copolymer with ethylene and other hydrocarbons. It can also be blended with polyisobutylene. PP is one of the lowest density plastics, translucent to natural milky white with a highly crystalline structure. PP homopolymer has poor low-temperature resistance but this has largely been overcome by copolymerisation with ethylene. [Pg.193]

Oriented LDPE is the most widely used of the shrink wrap materials. It has good strength, toughness and tear resistance. It also has good low-temperature resistance, hence is suitable for parts of the world with well below zero conditions. LDPE is a reasonable moisture barrier but is a relatively poor oxygen and carbon dioxide barrier. [Pg.259]
