Loss-on-ignition

The relationship between the BET monolayer capacity of physically adsorbed water and the hydroxyl content of the surface of silica has been examined by Naono and his co-workers in a systematic study, following the earlier work by Morimoto. Samples of the starting material—a silica gel—were heated for 4 hours in vacuum at a succession of temperatures ranging from 25 to 1000°C, and the surface concentration of hydroxyl groups of each sample was obtained from the further loss on ignition at 1100°C combined with the BET-nitrogen area. Two complete water isotherms were determined at 20°C on each sample, and to ensure complete... [Pg.272]

Magnesium hydroxide is white, has an average particle size of 1—10 p.m, density of 2.36 g/mL, refractive index of 1.58, and Mohs hardness of 2.00. Water loss on ignition is 31.8 wt %. Magnesium hydroxide contains 1.0 wt % Ca(OH)2 and is made by Solem Industries and Morton Thiokol (25). [Pg.458]

Many of the procedures used for technical analysis of aluminum hydroxides are readily available from the major producers of aluminum hydroxides. Phase Composition. Weight loss on ignition (110°—1200°C) can differentiate between pure (34.5% Al(OH)2) ttihydroxides and oxide—hydroxides (15% Al(OH)2). However, distinction between individual ttihydroxides and oxide —hydroxides is not possible and the method is not useful when several phases are present together. X-ray powder diffraction is the most useful method for identifying and roughly quantifying the phase composition of hydroxide products. [Pg.172]

The simplest analytical procedure is to oxidize a sample in air below the fusion point of the ash. The loss on ignition is reported as graphitic carbon. Refinements are deterrninations of the presence of amorphous carbon by gravity separation with ethylene bromide, or preferably by x-ray diffraction, and carbonates by loss of weight on treating with nitric acid. Corrections for amorphous carbon and carbonates are appHed to the ignition data, but loss of volatile materials and oxidation may introduce errors. [Pg.574]

The best indirect, but seldom used, method is to determine the total moisture separately in a Penfteld tube, determine the loss on ignition in air at 825—875°C, and report graphitic carbon as percent loss on ignition (100 — %moisture — %ash). It is desirable to use a platinum dish for ignition loss and it... [Pg.574]

Tannins may be found bound up with magnetite in waterside tube deposits. Degradation products of amines, glycols, polymeric dispersants, chelants, and other organics may also be found and usually are reported in the deposit analysis as a loss on ignition. [Pg.635]

Also, the loss on ignition is preferably determined for a waterway sediment sample because of its high content of immature organic matter. Loss on ignition is determined with a muffle furnace in which organic matter is ignited at 600 °C for more than 2 h. [Pg.903]

The chemical compositions of materials are usually expressed in terms of simple oxides calculated from elemental analysis determined by x-ray fluorescence. For spent foundry sand, the chemical parameters include bulk oxides mass composition, loss on ignition, and total oxygen demand. Table 4.6 lists the general chemical properties of spend foundry sand. It is shown that spent foundry sand consists primarily of silica dioxide. [Pg.165]
