Loss of self-esteem

ED is not a life-threatening condition, but left untreated it can be associated with depression, loss of self-esteem, poor self-image, and marital discord.11 The primary goal of therapy is achievement of erections suitable for intercourse and improvement in patient quality of life. Additionally, the ideal therapy should have minimal side effects, be convenient to administer, have a quick onset of action, and have few or no drug interactions.7... [Pg.782]

The stigma attached to mental illness is pervasive and affects the lives of people with mental illness. It makes the patient reluctant to come forward and ask for help. It makes rehabilitation after an episode of illness difficult. It contributes to the loss of self-esteem of the person who has the illness, a consequence that is particularly nefarious because it often blocks full recovery. Stigma also affects the members of the family, making them reluctant to admit that one of them has a mental illness and may need treatment, ft demeans institutions in which treatment is provided as well... [Pg.153]

The loss of my teaching career was very major. I had a very distinct loss of self-esteem, I can tell you. I saw myself first as a teacher and then as a wife and mother. I didn t understand why this person who had been a lifelong ham suddenly could not be around people. Every time I went to a movie or any event where there were a lot of people, I would get very panicky and just want to bolt. People thought it was agoraphobia. I now know it was because of the fragrances. [Pg.109]

More often than not, the people responsible for my coming to a workshop are not the administrators, they are the parents and injured teachers who are going through that loss of self-esteem and feeling that all of their influence has been taken from them. They re feeling isolated and ostracized. I share with them my story and the stories of others who have recovered, to show them that there is life after chemical injury and that no one can take your power away from you unless you allow them to. [Pg.116]

Osteoporosis is the most prevalent metabolic bone disease in the United States and results in 1.5 million fractures each year. Osteoporosis is associated with an increased risk for vertebral, hip, and distal forearm fractures. At age 50, women have a lifetime fracture risk (any of the above three sites) of about 40%. Men have a lifetime fracture risk of approximately one third that of women. Since trabecular bone turns over at five to seven times the rate of cortical bone, fractures of bones that are predominantly trabecular (vertebra and distal forearm) occur earlier in life. One third of women older than 65 years suffer vertebral crush fractures. Vertebral crush fractures can occur acutely and result in disabling pain and discomfort. Long-term complications include immobility and loss of height. Secondary problems include protuberant abdomen, chronic constipation, and loss of self-esteem. Fractures of bone with more cortical bone (proximal femur or hip) occur later in life. For women, the lifetime risk of hip fracture is 15%. The mortality rate accompanying hip fracture may be as high as 20%. Twenty-five percent of the survivors are confined to long-term care... [Pg.1932]

Urinary incontinence (UI) is defined as the complaint of involuntary leakage of urine. It is frequently accompanied by other bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms such as urgency, increased daytime frequency, and nocturia. It is a common yet underdetected and underreported health problem that can significantly affect quality of life. Patients with UI may have depression as a result of the perceived lack of self-control, loss of independence, and lack of self-esteem, and they often curtail their activities for fear of an accident. It may also have serious medical and economic ramifications for untreated or undertreated patients, including perineal dermatitis, worsening of pressure ulcers, urinary tract infections, and falls. [Pg.1547]

One of the most poignant and striking findings from this study, says Colantuono, is that cognitive impairments experienced by cancer patients alter the psyche. Patients most severely affected no longer identify with the person they were prior to treatment. Contributing to this loss of self is the loss of credibility, respect of others, self esteem, and employment. ... [Pg.33]

Depressive disorders can also cause substantial morbidity. Injury or illness occurs secondary to suicide attempts, accidents, substance abuse, malnutrition, or irrational behavior resulting from psychosis. Failure to seek medical attention for intercurrent medical disorders may occur because of apathy, feelings of guilt, or low self-esteem. Finally, impaired concentration and attention, a lack of energy, or anhedonia can all substantially impair psychosocial functioning (e.g., failure to advance in one s career or in school job loss social isolation dysfunctional home life, including divorce). [Pg.110]

A frequent additional feature is a subjective distortion of body image. Although painfully thin, individuals will insist that they are too fat and/or that their abdomen, buttocks or thighs are too large. Their self-esteem is highly dependent on their body weight and shape they celebrate further weight loss as a laudable achievement. [Pg.42]

Dental caries is one of the most conunon oral diseases. Unless properly treated, dental caries will progress to pulpitis, periapical infections, and ultimately result in dental loss. Dental loss can canse not only physical but also psychological suffering that compromises an individual s self-esteem and quality of life (Pihlstrom et al., 2005 Polzer et al., 2010 Jung et al., 2011 Otsu et al., 2014). Traditional therapies in current dental practice often result in the loss of tooth sensitivity and viability. Novel approaches based on tissne-derived and stem cell-derived ECM have been suggested as alternatives, along with bioactive scaffolds for dental repair. [Pg.63]

The connection between oral health and overall health has led to an increase in oral home care as well as in professional dentistry services. Patients seek dental care for routine maintenance of oral health and cosmetic procedures to improve the appearance of the face and mouth. In the future, dentistry will increasingly play a fundamental role in people s overall health and wellness. From preventing childhood tooth decay and age-related tooth loss to improving self-esteem through a brighter, straighter smile, dentistry has evolved from a fearful, painful process of tooth extraction to a respected field of medicine that is associated with comfortable care and daily hygiene. [Pg.474]

As noted, displacement frequently erodes social norms and—with disruption of traditional mechanisms of community order and accountability—creates conditions of impunity for perpetrators of violence. Along with the loss of sources of male self-esteem and autonomy through lack of work and restrictions on employment, this may result in significant vulnerability for women (p. 437)... [Pg.342]
