The most commonly used volatility strategy is to buy a straddle, which involves buying both a call and a put option at the same strike price. At maturity, this will give a V-shaped profile. However, straddles are normally short-term strategies, and are seldom held until maturity. For this reason, it is more relevant to look at the straddle profile in the short-term, well before the maturity of the options. Exhibit 17.25 shows the curved profiles of the straddle components—long a call and long a put option—when the straddle is created. The combination of the two gives the straddle a U-shaped profile at the outset as the chart illustrates. [Pg.559]

It remains unclear whether as a short-term strategy on-site production plants will make inroads into the market. In the long term, only hydrogen produced from wind power or biomass will considerably reduce GHG emissions—although the cost level will remain high. [Pg.235]

A few papers that consider pricing and production decisions have also incorporated capacity investment decisions as well. For instance, Li [97] studies the short-term strategies (price) as well as long-term decisions (capacity) where cumulative production and demand are both Poisson processes. [Pg.366]

Pohution prevention techniques must be evaluated through a thorough consideration of ah media, hence the term multimedia. This approach is a clear departure from previous pollution treatment or control techniques where it was acceptable to transfer a pollutant from one source to another in order to solve a waste problem. Such strategies merely provide short-term solutions to an ever increasing problem. As an example, air pollution control equipment prevents or reduces the discharge of waste into the air but at the same time can produce a solid (hazardous) waste problem. [Pg.2165]

Explain why certain important long-range air pollution control strategies will not suffice for short-term episode control, and vice versa. [Pg.71]

We shall shortly discuss long-term strategies for making better use of information and avoiding information breakdowns, but there are also some shortterm quick wins that can be easily implemented and have been shown to yield a fast improvement in information use. [Pg.234]

In general, the results confirm the short-term nature of the pharmaceutical cost containment strategy. The trend followed by spending in the long term effectively shows a return to the initial levels prior to the measures. [Pg.201]

This article describes the strategy on endocrine-disrupting substances issued by the European Commission last December, and details why its short-term goal to compile a priority list of chemicals for research and testing has been attacked by industry, environmentalists and scientists alike. [Pg.82]

Residual hydrocarbons will continue to serve as a source of groundwater contamination thus, remediation strategies for DNAPLs should emphasize long-term control and management (i.e., source containment, pool control, and recovery) vs. short-term fixes. Regardless of an increased level of effort (i.e., additional wells, increased pumping rates, etc.), the overall time for remediation is not expected to shorten by more than a factor of five. [Pg.202]
