Long shots

By now you probably think we are done. Not by a long shot There is considerably more to learn about the effect of noise of a spectrum when the detector noise is constant, some of which is even more surprising than what we have seen until now. 

The meticulous care that goes into the selection, preparation, and checking of these procedures entails a very substantial effort on the part of the Editorial Board members and their coworkers and first (by a long shot) among equals in this group is Professor Jeremiah Freeman. Jerry s enormous contributions to Organic Syntheses ensure continued fruition of all our endeavors. Special appreciation must also be extended to Assistant Editor Theodora Greene tor her invaluable participation in the editorial process. 

Since we were on the hunt, we did read a few such books, discovering that we were not the first, by a long shot, to observe the effectiveness of physostigmine as a belladonnoid antidote. We also found several relevant articles, published a decade earlier in the American Journal of Psychiatry and several other reputable journals. They came from a relatively little known group of psychiatrists who were investigating a new form of therapy in their hospital. The story is somewhat convoluted, but nonetheless interesting. 

A betting man would have considered such a result a long shot at best. 

We were also talking about turning sawdust into petroleum products. The price of petroleum in the world was over 35 a barrel, if my memory serves me at all, which was high for the decade. A prominent oil company became intrigued with the sawdust to petroleum idea and gave us somewhere between 30 or 40 million to get us started on our long-shot idea. 

A long shot is in the 300 yard range, but is within the training parameters for a SWAT officer. How far is the target as measured in (a) feet, (b) meters, and (c) kilometers ... 

I have to do some teaching [to the officers about how to operate some NDRC equipment]. Yesterday I taught and talked for five hours, and it was not easy, believe me. It s not like at Caltech. Here every man knows a different amount by a long shot, so no matter what you do, you go too fast for some and too slow for others. 

The two most familiar types of camera shots in film are close-ups or long shots. Films are made up of disparate fragments of film, of which close-ups and long shots are but two types. Another would be the extreme long shot (or a camera motion shot—dolly, tracking, trucking, stedicam, tilt, or pan). 

Sumner wrote in his Nobel Lecture 1 decided in 1917 to attempt to isolate an enzyme.. .. 1 desired to accomplish something of real importance. In other words I decided to take a long shot. .. . Since the jack bean Canavalia ensiformis appeared to be extraordinarily rich in urease, I could see no reason why this enzyme could not be isolated in pure form and characterized chemically. The task took nine years. 

This new injection molding process step, compared to the standard IM method first developed about 15 years ago (see Sects. 3.1 and 5.2.4 in Chapter Processing (Primary Forming) of Plastics into Structural Components ), involves opportunities and risks as illustrated in Table 12, whereby the opportunities predominate by a long shot and the risks have now been practically nullified by a new processing method. 

The content of solute oxygen depends mainly on temperature and salt content. The gases dissolved in seawater do not reach saturation levels by a long shot, not even in areas close to the surface. Table 4 lists the balanced saturation values for oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide at a gas pressure of 101 kPa and at different temperatures and salt contents [9].
