The result obtained by GC-MS, with the same SPME conditions, from the black thick balm of a crocodile mummy (sample 1400, Musee Guimet, Lyon, France) is presented in Figure 10.11. The composition of the extract is close to that of sample 1998 but phenolic compounds were not detected. The GC-MS chromatogram obtained with the same substance after acid methanolysis and silylation is presented in Figure 10.12. Except for the sesquiterpenoids eluted between 10 min and 22 min, the observed compounds originate from a beeswax. The biomarkers of this substance are hexadecanoic acids hydroxylated in position 14 or 15 and long chain hydrocarbons, acids and alcohols eluted between 50 min and 90 min. Diterpenoid or triterpenoid resin components are not observed. [Pg.286]

This group of ingredients has many useful properties. Alcohols and phenols are very common in household products. Alcohols are good solvents and are used in perfumes and flavorings to dissolve fats and oils. Heavier alcohols with long chains of hydrocarbons act as emulsifiers and surfactants, bringing oil and water together. [Pg.55]

The semi-crystalline character of polybutylene terephthalate and polyethylene terephthalate is the reason for their good resistance to chemicals. Organic solvents, such as aliphatic hydrocarbons, fuels, alcohols, ethers, long-chain esters, fats, oils, perchlorinated hydrocarbons, and the fiuorinated hydrocarbons used in aerosol technology do not attack thermoplastic polyesters at room temperature. These plastics are also resistant to weak acids, weak bases, water, and to aqueous solutions of neutral and acid salts at room temperature. However, they are non-resistant to strong acids, oxidizing acids, strong bases, ketones, and phenols. [Pg.753]

Cardanol is a main component of thermally treated cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), and is a phenolic compound with a long unsaturated hydrocarbon chain substituted in the meta position (Figure 2.17a). Urushiol, which is obtained from lacquer tree, poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac (Toxicodendron), and used for a raw material of a lacquer (urushi) in East Asia, is also a phenolic compound of catechol with a long unsaturated or saturated hydrocarbon chain (Figure 2.17b). Cardanol-based polymers have been reported very often, while there are a few research reports on urushiol-based polymers. Research on polymers synthesized from cardanol or CNSL are reviewed elsewhere. In the late 1980s, cardanol or CNSL-based polymers began to be reported as novel phenol-formaldehyde type resins and novel epoxy resins.Thereafter, Pillai and his co-workers have vigorously studied synthesis of various type of cardanol-based polymers polymers obtained... [Pg.49]
