The Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation has played a prominent role in enantioselecitve organic synthesis. Two groups have recently reported improvements in the procedure. Osmo E.O. Jose Santos earned his doctorate in medicine from the Classic University of Lisbon in 1984. He has been a Clinical Research Associate at Lab. Servier and Associate Medical Director at Lab. Pfizer. Since 1992, Dr. Santos has been Medical Director at OM Portuguesa, S.A. He has also been serving ad Medical Rapporteur in the Commission of Revision of Pharmaceutical Products (CREF of the National Institute of Pharmacy and Medicines (INFARMED) since 1995. He is a member of the Portuguese Medical Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry and the Ordem dos Medicos and is a faculty member in pharmaceutical medicine at the Royal College of Physicians in the United Kingdom. 

The University of Lisbon has, since 1999, offered a 6-month non-residential course in pharmaceutical medicine taught every year from January till June. The course has 11 modules with two 2-day sessions per month, representing a total of 176 hours of teaching. Assessments are made at the end of each module, and only those students who have passed the 11 assessments and have attended 100% of the course are allowed to submit a dissertation of 20 000 words at the end of the course. Successful candidates receive a Diploma in Pharmaceutical Medicine recognized by the Portuguese National Board of Physicians, where the Pharmaceutical...
