Temporal sequence of OH-LIF measurements captures a localized extinction event in a turbulent nonpremixed CH4/H2/N2 jet flame (Re 20,000) as a vortex perturbs the reaction zone. The time between frames is 125 ps. The velocity field from PIV measurements is superimposed on the second frame and has the mean vertical velocity of 9m/s subtracted. (From Hult, J. et al.. Mature yellow lemons were picked freshly from trees growing at the Citrus Experiment Station at Riverside prior to a given treatment, which resulted in pickings at various times over a year s period. Eureka lemons were used in the treatments with elemental sulfur and with sulfuric acid. (Asterisks are employed to indicate radioactive atoms.) Lisbon lemons were used in the treatment with hydrogen sulfide and a mixture of both was used in the treatment with sulfur dioxide. Pickings were made on April 27, 1948, and January 1, April 7, and May 10, 1949, for the various treatments. [Pg.252]

This review outlines aspects of the various phases of Swiss chemistry from the introduction of alchemy in Western Europe, its transition to chemistry as a science and profession and the more recent practice. Attention is drawn to the large number of Swiss Nobel Laureates in chemistry and the contributions of Swiss physicists to chemical spectroscopy, from the days of Balmer. In all periods, Swiss chemistry has had European dimensions, and links can be traced to most host countries of previous Euroanalysis conferences and indeed to the next, at Lisbon, in AD 2000... [Pg.326]

Rauter and her coauthors Xavier, Lucas, and Santos (Lisbon) present here a detailed overview of the potential for heterogeneous catalysts in useful synthetic transformations of carbohydrates. Such silicon-based catalysts as zeolites are easy to handle and recover, are nontoxic, and can offer interesting possibilities for exercising stereo- and regio-control in many established carbohydrate transformations. [Pg.2]
