Lippia sidoides

One of the first methods using microwave-assisted extraction of essential oil was presented in 1989 by Craveiro [44]. The essential oil of Lippia sidoides was extracted using microwave energy and compressed air only. Inspired by classical steam distillation, the CAMD technique used compressed air instead of vapor to extract the volatile oil. Typically, plant material is placed in a reactor inside the microwave cavity and heated. At the same time, a compressor, located outside the cavity, forces compressed air into the reactor. Volatile oil and vapor are then driven to the recovery flask outside the cavity. In 5 min CAMD provides an essential oil which is qualitatively and quantitatively identical with that produced by the conventional hydrodistillation method. [Pg.968]

Applying conventional (thermogravimetry TG Differential thermal analysis DTA evolved gas detection EGD) and combined (thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry TG-MS) techniques, the pCD inclusion complexes with thymol and Lippia sidoides Cham EO (LsCEO) extract produced by kneading method were characterized. Its formations were detected through released gas... [Pg.884]

The essential oil of Lippia sidoides (rich in thymol and carvacrol) was used in a double blind, randomized, parallel armed study against gingival in ammation and bacterial plaque. Fifty ve patients used a 1% essential oil solution as a mouth rinse twice daily for 7 days, and the results were compared to a positive control, 0.12% chlorhexidine. Clinical assessment demonstrated decreased plaque index and gingival bleeding scores as compared to the baseline, with no signi cant difference between test and control. The essential oil of L. sidoides was considered a safe and effective treatment. [Pg.391]

The topical anti-inflammatory effect of the leaf EO of the Verbenaceae Lippia sidoides Cham, was studied by Monteiro et al. (2007). In northwestern Brazil, the plant is widely used in the social medicine program Live Pharmacies as a general antiseptic because of its strong activity against many microorganisms. After topical application of 1 and 10 mg/ear, in 45.9% and 35.3%, a significant reduction (p < 0.05) of the acute ear edema induced by 12-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA) could be observed. [Pg.253]
