Lipids ginseng effect

Physioiogicai There is an extensive literature that deals with the effects ginseng on CNS function, but effects are also seen in neuroendocrine function, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, the immune system, and cardiovascular function (Gillis 1997). Ginsenosides induce a decrease in heart rate and have biphasic effects on blood pressure, with decreases preceded by a slight increase (Kaku et al. 1975). Ginsenoside Rgl had the most potent effects on blood pressure. Little or no effect is observed on respiration.

The effects of PGS and PNGS on ascorbate/Fe2+-induced lipid peroxidation were studied [184], PNGS and the major saponin Rb of PGS caused partial inhibition of the lipid peroxidation in cardiac muscle homogenates in a concentration-dependent manner whereas PGS had very little effect and Rgi was inactive. On the other hand, PNGS from the leaves promoted the lipid peroxidation. These results suggested that some ginseng saponins may be antioxidants and other coexisting saponins may act as prooxidants [184],... 

Effects of saponins on nucleic acid biosynthesis and serum protein metabolism have been extensively studied 169 — 182). The presence in Ginseng of substances with adenosine triphosphate activity has been reported 183). Effects by the saponins on cholesterol metabolism and that of other lipids have been described 184 — 188).
