The mastic type sealants include hand-applied systems based on linseed oil (putty), gun-applied oil-based systems, using one or more drying oils and gun-applied butyl systems based generally on liquid polyisobutylene (PIB) with oils and solvents. Oil based caulking compounds are supplied in knife and gun grades. Gun grades are viscous semiliquids whereas knife grades are more viscous and are similar to mortar in consistency. A simple linseed oil putty has a composition of 12 parts oil and 88 parts calcium carbonate filler. The sealants can be appUed at temperatures between 40 to 100°F (4 to 38°C). Modified phenolic resins are condensation products of the resol type which contain other starting materials besides phenol and formaldehyde (e.g., acrylic monomers). The phenolic component itself is often modified (alkyl- or arylphenols). Modification with rosin is the most important one. Absorption, oil n. Oil absorption of a pigment or extender is recorded as the amount of vegetable drying oil required to convert a given mass or volume of the dry powder to a very stiff putty-like paste, which does not break or separate. Putties. Used in the glazing of wood sash, putties are generally based on linseed oil, filled with calcium carbonate or blends of calcium carbonate and titanium dioxide. Formulations are shown in Table 4. Containing 11-12% oil, they dry by oxidation to hard, inflexible joints with little movement possible. Putties are supplied as bulk compounds for knife application to wood or metal sash.
