Liner board

Thermal Insulation. Foamed plastics (qv) are used as thermal insulation for aU types of constmction because of their low heat- and moisture-transmission values. Polystyrene is used either as foamed board or expandable beads. The foam may be faced with a stmctural surfacing material, eg, a kraft liner-board, to form a panel for insulating mobile homes. These foams can dupHcate the appearance of wood and be used as trim. Foams can also be used as backing, for example, on aluminum siding, to provide heat and sound insulation. Foamed beads can be incorporated in concrete to reduce its density and provide some thermal insulation. [Pg.332]

Investigations in the area of liner boards indicated that treatment of ground wood, of Kraft fiber, or of their mixtures with H2O2 or sodium chlorate in the presence of acids improved wet strength of the resulting liner boards. This was related to the formation of interfiber bonds (79). The process was patented 4 years later under inclusion of a fiber confrication step (80). [Pg.361]

LDPE coating to polyester film, clay-coated liner board, and aluminum foil was improved by an addition of calcium carbonate. Adhesion increases as the amount of calcium carbonate is increased and at a 30% level it is doubled. The adhesion of SBR to a polyurethane adhesive was substantially improved (400%) by the addition of silica but only when the surface was roughened. The amount of silica did not affect adhesion of unroughened SBR. The use of MgO with silane coupling increased adhesion of bromobutyl liner by a factor of four. Generally, in the reported data, surface roughening of the filled composite contributes to a better adhesion to other substrates joined by adhesives. [Pg.444]

Fibreboard kegs can be used for solid bulk drug, bulk tablet, or bulk excipient containment and transport. These are made up of multiple plies of test or Kraft liner board, convolutedly wound on a mandrel and bonded with sodium silicate adhesive between the plies. There may be an LDPE or other inside liner and the exterior may also be varnished. The base could be of either metal or plain thick board, the latter waterproofed by dipping into paraffin wax. [Pg.131]

Stock temperature is certainly important as foam tends to be less stable at higher temperatures. This is one reason drainage often improves on a pulp or paper machine by operating at higher temperatures. For example, it is common for machines making unbleached Kraft liner board to operate at about 60°C with the benefit of increased production. [Pg.58]

One application area between 1962 and 1979 that has an impact on today s problems is the manufacture of wall-board. Wallboard was prepared by sandwiching a gypsum mixture between heavy papers. A typical core consists of gypsum, starch, potash, a pulp slurry, an asphalt or rosin-size emulsion, and gauging water (i.e., a colloidal silica plus polymer binder system). The mixture is blended together and placed between liners made on liner-board machines. [Pg.717]

The cost associated with the retrofit was almost negligible, apart from the trial and laboratory evaluation costs. However, the benefits were substantial for refining of the high-Kappa pulp that was used to manufacture the kraft liner board papers. These included substantial savings in refining energy, an increase in throughput and improvement in product quality... [Pg.407]
