Packaging Paper and Board Grades

A large number of grades of paper and board are available for packaging and are employed for many different purposes. 

Packaging paper grades range from simple wrapping paper (WP, made from mixed recovered paper) to kraft paper, and are predominantly supplied in roUs. 

They are made from various virgin pulps (sulfite/kraft pulp), from recycled fibers or from mixtures of chemical pulp and recycled fibers. These grades are employed in the production of bags, beer mats, carrier bags, gift wrapping paper, etc. Some examples are  

Folding hoxhoard is ideally suited for the production of folding boxes because of its properties, such as good scorability, creasing ability, groovabihty, and print-ability. This board can be coated or uncoated the former gives a better printed format. 

Machine-made hoard (also solid fiber board) is produced almost exclusively from recycled fibers and is processed primarily into mailing boxes.

Mixed grades comprising always a mixture of various paper and board grades used for the production of packaging paper and board. 

Further important criteria for paper and board grades used for packaging include low odor, flexibility, fold crack stability, glue-ability, and grease resistance. Coated specialty papers require specific properties, such as alkali resistance (labels), washability (wallpaper), and solvent resistance (silicone release paper). 

Control of the serviceability of many grades of paper and board, e. g. milk/juice carton, packaging papers, wallpaper, printing writing papers, etc. 

Under the German Food Law, PEGs are approved as humectants for papers, cardboard, and boards for food packaging. As well as liquid grades, mixtures of liquid and solid PEGs (e.g., PEG 400 and PEG 1500 in a 1 1 ratio) are often used and can be applied to a 1 to 5% aqueous solution. The amount applied is governed by the weight per m , and the stuff composition. The solution can be applied by brush dampers, size presses, jet dampers, or similar units. 

Sheet-lined hoard is made from mill board. It may also be pasted, is lined on one or both sides with paper, and is used for high-grade packaging. 

Producers of board try to manufacture board for foodstuff packaging with other, less mineral oil-contaminated RCP grades. Major sources of mineral oil in paper for recycling are offset coldset inks preferably used in newspapers and which contain typically 20-30% mineral oil as solvent [12]. By appropriate sorting of the RCP, the theoretical possibility exists to remove newspapers from collected household paper mixtures, so-called household collections, so that a mixed RCP grade without newspaper is generated especially for board production.
