Depending on their stmctural type, PEPE oils are stable up to 300—400°C ia air. Pure oxygen ia a test bomb at 13 MPa (1886 psi) at temperatures up to 400°C was tolerated with no ignition (43). Densities at 20°C vary from 1.82 to 1.89 g/mL, and viscosities from 10 to 1600 mm /s. Polystyrene. Polystyrene [9003-53-6] is a thermoplastic prepared by the polymerization of styrene, primarily the suspension or bulk processes. Polystyrene is a linear polymer that is atactic, amorphous, inert to acids and alkahes, but attacked by aromatic solvents and chlorinated hydrocarbons such as dry cleaning fluids. It is clear but yellows and crazes on outdoor exposure when attacked by uv light. It is britde and does not accept plasticizers, though mbber can be compounded with it to raise the impact strength, ie, high impact polystyrene (HIPS). Its principal use in building products is as a foamed plastic (see Eoamed plastics). The foams are used for interior trim, door and window frames, cabinetry, and, in the low density expanded form, for insulation (see Styrene plastics). [Pg.327]

In the Institut Fransais du Petrc le process (62), ethylene is dimerized into polymer-grade 1-butene (99.5% purity) suitable for the manufacture of linear low density polyethylene. It uses a homogeneous catalyst system that eliminates some of the drawbacks of heterogeneous catalysts. It also inhibits the isomerization of 1-butene to 2-butene, thus eliminating the need for superfractionation of the product (63,64). The process also uses low operating temperatures, 50—60°C, and pressures (65). [Pg.367]

Union Carbide Corp. also uses a siUca-supported chromium catalyst in their extremely low cost Unipol gas-phase linear low density ethylene copolymer process, which revolutionized the industry when it was introduced in 1977 (86—88). The productivity of this catalyst is 10 —10 kg polymer/kg transition metal contained in the catalyst. The presence of a large number of chain-ends in the fully synthesized dendrimer molecules makes them highly soluble and also readily miscible, for example with other dendrimer solutions. The solubility is controlled by the nature of the end-groups, so that dendrimers with hydrophilic groups, such as hydroxyl or carboxylic acid, at the ends of the branches are soluble in polar solvents, whereas dendrimers with hydrophobic end-groups are soluble in non-polar solvents. The density of the end-groups at the surface of the dendrimer molecule means that they have proportionately more influence on the solubility than in linear polymers. Hence a dendritic polyester has been shown to be more soluble in tetrahydrofuran than an equivalent linear polyester. [Pg.131]

Both thermosets and thermoplastics are used as food-contact materials, though thermoplastics predominate in this appfication. Examples of the former are phenol- and urea-formaldehyde, while probably the best known example of the latter is low-density poly(ethylene). Other linear polymers are used include high-density poly(ethylene), poly(propylene), and PVC, all of which find quite extensive use. Polymers for food packaging may be in the form of films and other flexible items, or in the form of rigid containers, such as clear drinks bottles or opaque cartons for dairy products. [Pg.158]
