LIMS—See Laboratory Information Management Systems

How do you evaluate various products for adoption The current environment is similar to the Laboratory information management systems (LIMS) market in the mid-1980s (see Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)). ELNs are evolving toward the SEA paradigm rapidly since better software creation tools are rapidly becoming available. Do you experiment now, and start up the learning, adaptation curve Or do you wait till a stable environment exists That is a question you must decide. However, there are some simple tests you can apply to today s products. 

For the analytical chemist, databases are an essential resource when carrying out their day-to-day activities in product identification. All the major spectroscopic techniques have large databases associated with them, these are used to compare spectra derived from unknown chemicals etc. and so the whole process of product identification is made faster. These are dealt with using a laboratory information management system (LIMS) (see Section B, 2.9.1). 

Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) are widely used in the laboratories of pharmaceuticals and related industries. LIMS is typically based on client server technology supported by a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) as a storage repository (see Figure 21.1). They can be used to manage and process large amounts of electroiuc analysis data locally within a laboratory or company-wide between sites. 

The results are imported into the laboratory information management system (LIMS) as a text file. The LIMS system is programmed with the cutoff values (Table 2) for each drug and LIMS converts the quantitative results to qualitative reports (positive/negative) (see Note 5). The quantitative data is stored in LIMS for future reference.
