Light stable polyurethane

A trend ia the utihty of isophorone is as an important iadustrial building block. Foremost among these developments has been the use of isophorone as a raw material, and isophorone diisocyanate [2855-13-2] (IPDl), for the production of the light-stable polyurethane. The U.S. market for IPDl-based products was 31 million ia 1989, and is estimated to grow to 53 million ia 1994 (230). [Pg.495]

Most of the hexamethylenediamine produced is used for the manufacture of Type 66 nylon by polymerization with adipic acid. A minor use is for the preparation of hexamethylene diisocyanate used in light-stable polyurethane coatings. [Pg.136]

The industrial production of hexamethylenediamine became important with the discovery of the use of polyamides as synthetic fibres, the most important being Nylon-6,6. This polymer, prepared from adipic acid and hexamethylenediamine, was commercialized by DuPont in 1938 and it was virtually the only consumer of the entire production of this diamine until the development of light-stable polyurethanes. A number of specialty aliphatic polyisocyanates have been introduced recently in attempts to produce a light-stable polyurethane coating. Various forms of polyurethane coatings are available. Hexamethylene diisocyanate was one of the first diisocyanates utilized for making polyurethanes, being used to prepare fibres and moulding compounds. Foams have a large variety of applications. Solid foams are widely used as insulating materials. Due to the presence of air bubbles they have a low thermal conductivity. Polyurethane foams and Styrofoam are examples. Styrofoam is also used as a packing material.
