Historical control data can also be obtained from other laboratories such as CROs, some of which have a long history of reproductive and developmental toxicity testing and have large multispecies historical control databases that can span decades, and are therefore very useful for observing long term trends. This type of data can be especially informative when looking for occurrences of rare malformations in controls. Charles River Laboratories (www.criver.com) is one CRO that has made its historical data for reproductive and developmental toxicity publicly available. Historical control data for the CD rat and the New Zealand White rabbit is also available in the literature (8, 9, 13-15). Other laboratories may provide data upon request. [Pg.280]

Animals and Diets. Post-weanling male Long-Evans Hooded rats (Charles Rivers Laboratory, Wilmington, MA) weighing approximately 50g were fed on chemically defined, purified diets for a minimum of 5 weeks. To avoid high operative mortality rate associated with small animal vascular catheterization, it is advisable to purchase animals that are surgically prepared and ready to use from a commercial vendor such as Charles River Laboratories. [Pg.235]

Male CD-I mouse (Charles River Laboratories, Shrewsbury, MA, USA). [Pg.232]

Carlsbad, CA, USA). Aliquots of 120,000 labeled U87 and HB1.F3 cells in 3 xl sterile PBS are surgically injected into the left brain hemisphere of anesthetized nude mice using a stereotactic device on days 1 and 10, respectively. Swiss nude male mice of 4—8 weeks of age (Charles River Laboratories, Wilmington, MA, USA) are anesthetized and killed by intraperitoneal 90 mg/kg ketamine and 10 mg/kg xylazine. Method 2 (Section 3.2) animal manipulations are committee approved and carried out in the animal facility at the Brigham and Women s Hospital in accordance with federal, local, and institutional guidelines. Animals are sacrificed on day 14, and the brains readily dissected and flash frozen in liquid nitrogen. [Pg.419]

DBM and para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) were purchased from Aldrich Chemical Company, Inc (Milwaukee, WI). DMBA was obtained from Calbiochem-Beluinger (San Diago, CA). TPA was purchased from CRC, Inc., (Chanhassen, MN). Mirex was purchased from Fischer Scientific (Springfield, NJ). Female SKH-1 mice (5-6 weeks old) and female CD-I mice (23 days old or 5-6 weeks old) were purchased from Charles River Laboratories (Kingston, NY) and kept in animal facility at least 1 week before use. Mice were fed a Purina Laboratory Chow 5001 diet and water ad libitum. [Pg.198]

Female CF-1 mice (4-6 weeks old) were purchased from Charles River Laboratories (Wilmington, MA). The animals had free access to food and water throughout the experiment. The mice (initially fed the control AIN 76A diet for 4 days after arrival at the laboratory) were either continued on the same diet (control) or fed a 0.2% orange peel extract in AIN 76A diet or 0.2% nordihydroxguaiaretic acid (NDGA) in AIN 76A diet until the end of the experiment. AIN 76A diet and 0.2% orange peel in AIN 76A diet and 0.2% nordihydroxyguaiaretic acid in AIN 76A diet were purchased from Research Diets, Inc. (New Brunswick, NJ). [Pg.215]
