PROBLEMS You will, over the course of your studies, learn mechanisms for the following reactions. In the meantime, you will be given the regiochemical information that you need to answer each of the problems below. These problems are intended to ensure that you understand what regiochemistry means. 

This section details the different aspects of the representation we have adopted to describe the problem solutions and the new control knowledge generated by the learning mechanism. The method is different in nature from the techniques discussed elsewhere in this book because, despite the fact that the cells that comprise a CA model evolve, they do not learn. The lack of a learning mechanism places the method at the boundaries of Artificial Intelligence, but the algorithm still has features in common with AI methods and offers an intriguing way to solve scientific problems.

The basic learning mechanism for networks of multilayer neurons is the generalized delta rule, commonly referred to as back propagation. Although neural network models have been in existence in one form or another for some time, their current popularity depends in great measure on the work carried out in the 1980s by McClelland, Rumelhart and the PDP Research Group (1986). Their introduction of PDP models, explanation of the basic learning mechanisms used in these models, and descriptions of applications to a wide variety of cognitive phenomena sparked widespread interest and debate. The intensity of the debate between symbolic and neural net modelers was partly due to the strong reactions occasioned by McClelland and Rumelhart s claims about their models. 

The ReDS system developed by Siemens AG uses the real-time shop-floor data for another purpose as well (besides rescheduling). It uses the data in the form of a long-term feedback in order to make adjustments in the heuristics employed. This learning mechanism enables a scheduling system to mold itself over time into the shape of the factory in which it is operating. 

Examples of learning mechanisms are neural networks and ant algorithms. Heuristics remains a reliable approach for the solution of practical instances of hard combinatorial problem such as the vehicle routing problem (Langevin and Riopel 2005).
