Learning communities majors

Water quality projects such as those described below have been shown to be effective methods for engaging students in environmental chemistry courses for majors (Juhl et al. 1997) and for nonscience majors (Lunsford et al. 2007). When the water quality research projects were conducted, Chemistry and the Environment was linked to a world geography course as part of a learning community. The consequence is that Swarthmore has retained engineering as a major, one that its provost (C. Hungerford, Personal Communication, December 4, 2008) says is an integral part of its identity... that fits into community based learning. Community-based learning is a natural outcome of the Quaker-based commitment to social responsibility that permeates much of Swarthmore s educational mission. Engineering provides one important place where theory and practice intersect.

Our project includes three major components. The first component is a learning community for first-year science majors, especially secondary teaching majors in the sciences and mathematics. The second component is a group of laboratory instructional modules developed for courses across biology, chemistry, and physics using a common piece of nanoscience instrumentation. The modules were an attempt to stress recent research in nanoscience rather than simply repeat other previously developed materials. The third component ineludes internships for upper level students (with a preference given to pre-serviee teaehers) involving module development. 

When individuals from several disciplines try to address a common problem, how do they communicate with each other and what process do they select for their paradigm If each individual believes that their paradigm is the only one to use and that every one must use that nomenclature and process, major confrontations can arise. If there is a dominate personality that forces everyone on the team to learn the leaders paradigm, language, and process, then a learning period of several years may be required before the team can be effective. An alternative is to create a compromise language acceptable to the team, but this can create a communication barrier between the team and the traditional disciplines. 

The first problems on the list are not specific to radon control but are encountered on nearly every construction job. In spite of quality control and communication problems and the understandable wariness builders show when asked to build something in a different way, the residential construction industry has responded to new techniques, materials, and public demands. The average house being built today is very different from a home built 20 years ago. If a product or a method can be demonstrated to reliably keep radon out without presenting significant problems with cost, scheduling, or installation, many builders would learn to use it. The major difficulty faced by mechanical barrier approaches is the thoroughness that seems to be required to ensure that no radon problem will occur. 

Chemical transmission is the major means by which nerves communicate with one another in the nervous system. The pre- and postsynaptic events are highly regulated and subject to use-dependent changes that are the basis for plasticity and learning in the CNS. Although direct electrical connections also occur, these account for transmission of information between nerves only in specialized cases. 

Educating others is a major coping skill for me. I m on the school board and have been working on policy development for about five years now. I ve done a lot in that direction. As I see society recognizing the need for a cleaner environment, my hope is sustained. But, it s very slow work and frustrating. Maybe the information I deliver will be discussed, or maybe it ll go to a committee. When I hit a dead end, the anger builds. I m learning how to communicate better and... 

This hook focuses on learning lessons from incidents to lower the risk of future major incidents. It is important to use a structured approach to incident investigation that huilds on proven and recognized techniques this makes it easier to develop consistent understanding from incidents and to communicate insights and results from investigations effectively. 

It has been 4 years since Sue entered into ajunior partnership with Mr. Burke, and at the end of next year, she will be majority owner of Professional Pharmacy. While the time has just flown by, Sue marvels at all she has learned about pharmacy practice from both the business and professional sides. Sue came to this realization shordy after her first scheduled meeting with this year s community pharmacy resident, Cindy Ryan.
