Leaderships Special Role

The ICCIDD has provided scientific leadership in a series of meetings with the WHO and UNICEF concerned with different technical aspects of control programs, such as the methods of assessment and the criteria for elimination (WHO/UNICEF/ICCIDD, 2001). The ICCIDD plays a special role in adapting scientific information for public health recommendations. 

Although I am grateful to all of my graduate school professors at Case Western Reserve University, I give special thanks to Dr. Eric Neilsen and Dr. Ron Fry for the positive impact they had on my professional development and my current role as a leadership and organizational development consultant.

Implementing a self-observation process is similar in many respects to a typical peer observation behavioral safety process but is much easier in other respects. The role of leadership is equally important in both approaches. While a self-observation approach often does not require the safety representatives or steering committee to do the same level of problem solving with the observation data, their use of observation data as the basis for reinforcement is even more critical in a self-observation process. If your organization opts for a self-observation process, these two elements warrant special study and attention. 

The reader will also find new chapters addressing special topics. In particular, the role of leadership (Chapter 17), addressing serious incidents (Chapter 18), employees working in isolation (Chapter 19), and the role of the steering committee (Chapters 20 and 22) all receive in-depth coverage.

Supervisors. Supervisors will be given special training to help them in their leadership role. They need to be instructed how to look for hidden hazards under their supervision, to insist with the maintenance of the physical protection in their areas, and to reinforce employee hazard training through performance feedback and, when necessary, fair and consistent enforcement.
