Leadership learning process

Leadership in this level is a holistic concept that connects people from the inner and outer sides of the organization for mutual benefits. Leadership here becomes a learning process that starts when the leader influences the group to do actions beyond their self-interest which in turn brings mutual benefits to initiators, participants, and people beyond the group or organization (Kemavuthanon and Duberley 2009).

Documented process structure provides rapid employee assimilations when transferring employees between sites. New employees, replacing existing process owners, are enabled to rapidly execute process responsibilities due to the abbreviated learning curve when processes have been well defined and documented. Systems designed as described here provide meaningful and comparable metrics for leadership to evaluate progress, compliance, and performance. 

Even though there are many leadership definitions, Komvies, Lucas, and McMahon (1998) noted several basic assumptions about leadership that are incorporated into the preceding definitions. These assumptions are that leadership is a learned behavior, is teachable, occurs at all levels of the organization, does not require a charismatic personality, is a relational process, is culturally influenced, requires followership, involves purposeful change that satisfies collective needs... 

Marie Curie worked tirelessly to develop radioactivity as a new discipline in physics. With the help of five assistants, she studied the effects of radioactivity and developed the atomic theory of its origin. In 1911, Marie was awarded her second Nobel Prize— this time in chemistry, for the chemical processes discovered in the identification of radium and polonium and for the subsequent characterization of these elements. During World War I, she trained doctors in the new methods of radiology and, after learning to drive, personally transported medical equipment to hospitals. After the war, Madame Curie assumed leadership of the newly built Radium Institute in Paris. In 1920, a campaign was mounted in the United States to produce 1 gram of radium for Marie to support her research. She traveled to the United States to receive the precious vial of radium at the White House in 1921. 

The people in an inclusive learning environment have the capacity to reflect on process, both individually and collectively. It is thus important for inclusive leadership development facilitators to create an environment in which everyone is encouraged, but not forced, to actively participate. When working with groups, facilitators should stress the importance of having openness and mutual respect for one another, as this encourages full participation from all, which is valuable to the organization. 

The Center for Creative Leadership (CCL), a well-known and internationally recognized global leadership development institute headquartered in the United States, developed a two-part process model for leadership development (McCauley et al., 2010). Part one includes the elements of assessment, challenge, and support (ACS) to make the learning experience more powerful and developmental.
