Water lead

Lead, plumbum nigrum, its occurrence in connection with silver, its uses in making certain bronzes, for making lead water pipes, and in sheet form, are described by Pliny. Its oxide (Pb 0) is described under the names of molyb-daena, lithargyros, and galena, as the product of roasting lead in the air, and as produced in the furnaces where silver and gold are smelted. White lead (cerussa) and our red lead were also known and described by Pliny, much as by authorities already quoted. 

Before cleaning any diffusion pump, it is important to remove and/or unplug any electrical leads. Water should be turned off and removed if necessary. If tubing needs to be replaced, it is always best to cut off rubber or plastic tubing with a razor blade and replace it, rather than to try and pull the tubing off a hose connection. 

As the Romans ingeniously introduced lead water pipes, it is likely that their water, carried in these pipes, was contaminated with lead as it still is today, especially in areas of soft or acidic water. The use of lead glazes in pottery and, even more importantly, lead cooking pots were other contributory factors. Thus the lead was dissolved from the surface of the lead pots or from the lead-containing glaze on pottery. Analysis of the bones of Romans from the time of their empire has shown high levels of lead, sufficient to cause lead poisoning.

The impact of environmental lead on wildlife and ecosystems has been a subject of study and concern. Water fowl may become poisoned from ingesting lead shot. Poisoning may lead to anorexia, lethargy, coma, and death. Other birds have also been shown to be impacted by environmental lead. The third set of variables lies in the postnatal environment. These include the physical environment (outdoors and in) and the social environment (family, peers, neighborhood, socioeconomic status, education, culture, and so on). Many of these variables affect the development of emotions, learning, language skills, and the processing of information by the brain—and can also affect gene expression via stress, infection, malnutrition, and toxins in air (for example, lead), water (for example, arsenic), and food (for example, mercury). Those effects that occur during early development can be extremely critical.

One major source of this lead was the sapa syrup. In addition, the Romans highly advanced plumbing system employed lead water pipes, which allowed lead to be leached into their drinking water. 

The skin has to be thoroughly cleaned before drawing blood samples for toxicological analysis. Washing with 0.1 mol/L hydrochloric acid, followed by rinsing with ethanol, removes lead contamination from the skin. Washing with only ethanol or ethanol and water was not sufficient for this purpose (Juselius et al., 1975). In a study of plasma lead, Everson and Patterson (1980) washed the skin successively with soapy water, alcohol, acetone, hydrochloric acid, and low-lead water.
