Unlike carbon dioxide and water that are the inevitable by products of complete combustion of hydrocarbons, species such as carbon monoxide, ethene, toluene, and formaldehyde can be emitted because combustion has been interrupted before completion. Many factors lead to emissions from incomplete combustion. Emitted unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide are regulated pollutants that must be eliminated. In automobiles with spark ignited engines, these emissions are almost entirely removed by the catalytic converter. 

The majority of systems studied have been aqueous solutions of either aromatic compounds or halogenated hydrocarbons. Such materials represent models for the major classes of organic pollutants in waste and ground water. The primary products resulting from the sonochemical treatment of phenol at 541 kHz (27 °C with bubbled air) are hydroquinone and catechol [22]. These compounds are easy to monitor and are clearly seen to be intermediates which disappear as the reaction progresses (Fig. 4.1). Similarly the sonolysis of aqueous 4-chlorophenol leads to products mainly characteristic of oxidation by OH radical e. g. 4-chlorocatechol but in both cases the final organic products are CO, CO2 and HCOOH (Scheme 4.2) [22-25]. 

In comparison to the simple transfer of the pollutants from one medium to another, which occurs with the conventional water-treatment methods, photocatalysis leads to the real destruction of the contaminants with the formation of innocuous products ...

Finally, water pollution arises from landfill leachates, although the causes of leachates are, rather, the remains of products on the packages. Historical packaging can also be the source of organic plasticizers for PVC, or lead and cadmium from pigments. ... 

A disturbance of the P-R (photosynthesis-respiration) balance results from vertical (lakes) or longitudinal (rivers) separation of P and R organisms. An unbalance between P and R functions leads to pollutional effects of one kind or another depletion of 0> if P < R or mass development of algae if production rates become larger than the rates of algal destruction by consumer and decomposer organisms (R < P).
