Lead—copper alloys are specified because of superior mechanical properties, creep resistance, corrosion resistance, and high temperature stabiUty compared to pure lead. The mechanical properties of lead—copper alloys are compared to pure lead, and to lead—antimony and lead—calcium alloys in Tables 4 and 5. [Pg.60]

Rea.ctivity ofLea.d—Ca.lcium Alloys. Precise control of the calcium content is required to control the grain stmcture, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties of lead—calcium alloys. Calcium reacts readily with air and other elements such as antimony, arsenic, and sulfur to produce oxides or intermetaUic compounds (see Calciumand calciumalloys). In these reactions, calcium is lost and suspended soHds reduce fluidity and castibiUty. The very thin grids that are required for automotive batteries are difficult to cast from lead—calcium alloys. [Pg.59]

Cast lead—calcium—tin alloys usually contain 0.06—0.11 wt % calcium and 0.3 wt % tin. These have excellent fluidity, harden rapidly, have a fine grain stmcture, and are resistant to corrosion. Table 4 Hsts the mechanical properties of cast lead—calcium—tin alloys and other alloys. [Pg.59]

Wrought lead—calcium—tin alloys contain more tin, have higher mechanical strength, exhibit greater stabiUty, and are more creep resistant than the cast alloys. Solders. In spite of the wide use and development of solders for millennia, as of the mid-1990s most principal solders are lead- or tin-based alloys to which a small amount of silver, zinc, antimony, bismuth, and indium or a combination thereof are added. The principal criterion for choosing a certain solder is its melting characteristics, ie, soHdus and Hquidus temperatures and the temperature spread or pasty range between them. Alloys of antimony, tin, and arsenic offer hmited improvement in mechanical properties, but the usefulness of lead is limited primarily because of its poor structural qualities. It has a low melting point and a high coefficient of expansion, and it is a veiy ductile material that will creep under a tensile stress as low as 1 MPa (145 IbFin"). [Pg.2451]

While carburisation itself is not a normal corrosion process, in that there is no metal wastage, absorption and diffusion of carbon can lead to significant changes in the mechanical properties of the affected material and in particular to marked embrittlement. Furthermore, initial carburisation can produce an acceleration of the normal oxidation process, a phenomenon that is notable in nickel-chromium alloys. [Pg.1074]

For long lengths of anode it is sometimes necessary to extrude one material over another to improve a particular characteristic. Thus titanium may be extruded over a copper rod to improve the longitudinal conductivity and current attenuation characteristics of the former lead alloys may be treated similarly to compensate for their poor mechanical properties. It should he noted that these anodes have the disadvantage that, should the core metal be exposed to the electrolyte by damage to the surrounding metal, rapid corrosion of the former will occur. [Pg.163]

The corrosion reactions may be slowed down by using zinc alloys (with lead and cadmium, also improving the mechanical properties of zinc to simplify the production process) instead of the pure metal, or by amalgamating the inner surface of the can by adding a small amount of a mercury compound to the electrolyte. [Pg.200]
